Charleston, SC church shooting

They did not “take him to a Burger King”.

No, Church’s Chicken.

No need to show me, I know the way to Hell.

Did they give him a bag of food to eat in the back of the patrol car?

"In Shelby, the FBI handled Roof’s initial questioning, Ledford said. Shelby police’s lone conversation with the mass-murder suspect was about food. Earlier in the day, Roof had bought water and chips at a south Charlotte gas station. Now he was hungry. Police bought him food from a nearby Burger King, Ledford said.

“He was very quiet, very calm. He didn’t talk,” Ledford said. “He sat down here very quietly. He was not problematic.”
AFAIU, he was brought to the police station, asked for food, and was brought food from a nearby Burger King.

What exactly Rick Kitchen’s objection to that is, I have no idea.

The victim of exaggerating journalism, as many of us have been from time to time.

I ask again. Would they have done the same for a black mass murder victim?

Where was the “rough ride”, the “shot resisting arrest”?

Well, Dylann Roof did not resist arrest. And yes, cops feed those they arrest, black or white. Surprised?

I think that when we’re discussing the very real problem of police racist violence against black people, it’s important we keep our shit straight. To do otherwise both needlessly impugns good cops and needlessly hands ammunition to folks who want to dismiss the problem as unfounded.

I presume that this motherfucker was being cooperative, and the police like having a cooperative motherfucker in custody, makes it easier to extract a confession; if the price of keeping this fucker cooperative is an extra value meal, they’ll pay it.

That’s how I want the police to work.

Instead of snarking at these cops for doing their job in an efficient, humane fashion, let’s hold them up as examples to the next racist assholes who kill a black suspect in custody.

Hopefully not. That would be macabre as fuck. What are they going to do, prop the corpse next to a Whopper?

Perhaps a better question is whether they’d do the same for a black mass murder suspect. If there were a mass murder, and the suspect were black, I’d fully expect the police to buy the Burger King meal. The world’s attention was on these cops. They knew that their every action would be scrutinized. That’s part of the problem with police-on-black violence: it tends (or at least tended, for decades) to be ignored or excused. It’s why body cameras are such a good idea. They give cops reasons to do things by the book.

I gathered from another post that they gave him Burger King food at the police station.

The story the Source relied on is ambiguous.

It’s not clear whether he complained of hunger during the ride or while they were waiting for the FBI to show up.

I don’t think it matters. At this point, you want the suspect to owe a debt to the police, to feel comfortable, so they’ll talk. You don’t want them hostile with their guard up. A fast food meal is a really cheap instrument for obtaining this cooperation.

(Someone is surely thinking, “Why the fuck do we care if he cooperates, they had him dead to rights?” At the moment of capture, it was unclear whether he was working alone.)

I don’t see mention of either South Carolina’s governor trying to get the Confederate flag taken down, or the fact that Walmart now will no longer sell anything with the Confederate flag on it.

It’s the latter that caused my jaw to drop. I never expected to see Walmart do anything like that.

Nikki Haley, IIRC, was hailed/derided (take your pick) as a rising Tea Party star when she first ran for Governor. I think both her action and that of Walmart are equally jaw dropping. If any of the goobers running for the GOP nomination for President take that position I’ll be astounded. I’m holding my breath.

Lindsey Graham has called for the flag to come down.

Asshole wanted his legacy to be a race war. Turns out his legacy will be that racists will have a harder time buying their paraphernalia. That’s a good legacy.

And I am pleasantly surprised. Astonished, even. Now that one person has made the plunge it looks like everyone else is running to jump in the pool.

I was born there. Can I judge?

South Carolinians are the most polite racists I have ever met.

Drove by the State House yesterday on the way home from work. There were people out there holding “Honk the Flag Down!” signs and it seemed like everybody was honking. There were people out there taking pictures of the flag with this weird tourist air, like maybe “better get a photo of it while we can!” It’s crazy, I think I might actually live to see the day that thing comes down.

ETA - AtomicDog, I will therefore very politely tell you where the fuck you can shove that.

Honking is such a precise method of determining public opinion, isn’t it?

404 Error Page | Winthrop University page 22:

Do you think the Confederate Flag should or should not continue to be flown on the grounds of the South Carolina State House?

Strongly feel it SHOULD continue to fly: 42.4%
Somewhat feel it SHOULD continue to fly: 18.3%

At least it’s confirmed that S.C. is majority racist.
