Here is an official little tour gizmo of the State House monuments. The flag is, notably, not mentioned. A lot of the monuments commemorate noted assholes.
I read that the sale of Confederate flag items on Amazon has gone up 2000%
I also read that a Republican legislator in Mississippi has started the discussion about removing the Confederate flag from the Mississippi state flag.
Thanks, Zsofia.
I nearly got arrested for climbing on the Strom Thurmond statue (#16) and doing inappropriate things during Spring Break one year. Dude in a black suit came out of the Gressette Building and started waving a badge and a gun at us.
That’s because they are pulling all of it shortly.
Somebody will start a business selling Confederate battle flag stuff, just to cash in on other retailers abandoning it.
I just read an article stating that Charleston has promulgated a law, to last for sixty days, disallowing any kind of protests outside of funerals. That’s because the Westboro Baptist Church says it would come to picket. They have beeb quiet lately, even here at home. Probably just waiting for the next big news story to get ther name out there again. I wouldn’t put it past them to furnish a martyr to the “cause”
Baker, There are already small online businesses that sell that stuff but yeah I bet their sales go way up , at least temporarily.
It seems an awful lot like the Westboro Baptist Church has threatened to picket a lot more high-profile funerals but not shown up when the day actually came, unless some kind of under-the-table arrangements were made that I didn’t hear about. I guess between their patriarch Fred Phelps dying and several of their prominent younger members leaving, they’ve had a lot of the wind taken out of their sails.
Well, drat. That blows. But at least I can still buy Nazi memorabilia on Ebay.
Hopefully they won’t wise up about the Nazi memorabilia they allow to be sold on their site. Then where will I get my Nazi memorabilia.
No doubt. But I’m glad they are dropping that stuff nonetheless.
So are Amazon and eBay going to quit selling CDs by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alabama, etc.? Dukes of Hazzard DVDs and toys? Et cetera? What’s the standard?
Leaving aside the issue of whether flag merchandise is equivalent to things which happen to include depictions of flags, who says they have to have a standard? They’re private enterprises and they can take their ball and go home whenever they like. For what it’s worth, I’m pretty sure they’re not selling any Skrewdriver CDs.
Warner Brothers has pulled the licensing of General Lee cars.
I’m asking what their standard will be–how will they decide what to pull?
Amazon? They certainly are.
Lynyrd Skynyrd made the decision to stop using that flag 3 years ago, anyway.
I stand properly corrected (and slightly disgusted.)
They pulled a gun at college kids doing the stupid things college kids do?!?
Truly, the US is a different country.
Indeed, it is.
On the other hand, during a high school field trip to FDR’s house in Hyde Park, New York, a couple of classmates stood on top of FDR’s tomb and had a picture taken of themselves mooning the camera.
Which just goes to show that Northerners are a little less uptight than Southerners.
Apple has announced it will no longer sell games with Civil War themes on the Apple store. That’s going way out of bounds. And I say this as a liberal who applauds the removal of the Confederate flag from the Columbia Capitol grounds.
And people are now saying we should ban Gone With the Wind. Geez, overreact much? Birth of a Nation hasn’t even been banned!
And congrats to the Governor of Alabama for unilaterally removing the Confederate flag from state Capitol grounds.
We don’t ban films or burn books in the United States. I’ve been wondering about Huckleberry Finn.
We’re working on it, as hard as we can.
