Well, hell, that sucks, then. I saw the original when I was a wee one (in a theater) and the boat ride scared the bejeezus out of me. Not sure I want to see this if there’s not a scary ass boat ride.
I liked it but didn’t love it. Depp’s accent for Wonka creeped me out and not in a good way. I dunno, I think Wonka should have a euro-british accent not a southern-cum-fairy accent. But he was suitably wacked.
Oopma-loompa man was great. Loved “Oh hello Doris”.
Charlie was great, Grandpa Joe was great, Grandma Georgeiana was hysterical.
I thought the sub-plot was unnecessary and missed the subplot from the original movie (and the book? I forget) of Snogworth trying to get each kid to steal him a candy. 2001 homage in the TV room scene was priceless.
Overall I’d say see it. But I think not for kids - the melting puppets was disturbing, and so were other bits.
And is it just me or will everyone and their brother be Depp’s Wonka for Halloween?
It was fantastic. It was somehow better than I thought it would be, and I say that as a big fan of Burton, Depp, and this book.
The Oompa Loompa songs were just waiting for Danny Elfman to come along and work his magic with them. Their song sequences were worth the price of admission.
Does any of the narrative verse make it in?
eg;
I’ve always loved these little bits from the book and have been hoping that they found their way into the script, whether it be as lines for Willy Wonka, the Oompa-Loompas, or even V.O.
I’ll probably go see it today, if I can manage. Shall I anticipate this or put it behind me before I swallow the first Glosette?
I no longer remember the book, and I never saw the first movie, but the lyrics you posted sound very, very familiar to me - heard them today during Veruca’s chute scene, I think.
Yaaaay!
pees with glee
Haven’t you worked it out? Wonka has taken a whole tribe from their homeland, has set them to work in his factory, never lets them leave, gives them no pay other than beans, and makes them sing about how happy they are. The whole thing is obviously a metaphor for a cotton plantation in the deep south in slavery times.
You do know how the Oompa Loompas were depicted before the Great Revision, right?
(Ouch.)
As were the nods to Edward Scissorhands and the Christopher Lee LOTR joke with the fireplace.
I thought Johnny was an odd synthesis of Michael Jackson (mentioned above), Mr. Rogers, Emu Phillips, Alex from Clockwork Orange, and Enos from Dukes of Hazzard (the laugh).
Deep Roy (Chief Oompa Loompa) deserves an Oscar nomination.
I also loved the narration by Geoffrey “it’s the Un-Cola…Ha Ha Ha…” Holder. (That’s a rich distinctive voice we don’t hear often enough.)
WONKA (paraphrase): This is our Puppet Hospital and burn center…
… it’s a new addition
Thread title changed to reflect actual name of the movie.

As far as I could tell, each of the four songs the Oompa-Loompas sang had the lyrics taken word for word from the book. It has been a few years since I read the book, but they all seemed very familiar.
I will second that the lyrics you posted seem very, very familiar.
As far as the Oompas, I thought he didn’t make them sing- they liked it, wanted to, and did it on their own. Right before the first song someone asked Wonka what the Oompas were doing, he said something like, “…they haven’t had a real audience in a while, so this will be a treat.” And the Oompas are paid in beans because they prize them more than anything… am I being wooshed here?
I saw an interview with Depp and he said that he got the voice for Wonka from all kinds of stereotypical children’s show hosts. Which makes sense, when you think about it.
I’ll admit, the puppets melting was pretty creepy. I could see where that might freak a kid out.
Cleanup on Aisle 2.
You know, you all really shouldn’t come into the thread and mumble like that, 'cause I can’t understand a WORD you’re saying!
i saw this last night and very thoroughly enjoyed it.
at the end when the credits started to roll, i actually heard something in the range (aural estimate ahead!) of about 20 children start to applaud, but it was quickly subdued by the “omg, it’s 11:45 - we gotta go get our harry potter!” nonsense.
I liked it a lot, but I thought it was pretty damn creepy. Creepy in that kind of way that an adult or teenager would see the creepiness, but a child would probably look past it.
I was both happy and dissappointed at the boat scene. That used to scare the bejesus out of me when I was a kid, but the intensity was fantastic. The flashbacks on the new one were kind of smeh.
Definitely missing the subplot with the guy trying to pay off Charlie, and also I much much much prefered the ompa lompa music in the first.
On the utterely fantastic side, Johnny Depp was fantastic, and I’m so jealous that one actor got handed a script with line after line of awesome dialouge. He deserves it…would somebody give him an oscar for something already.
Thumbs up for the costumes and set designs…very very neat.
Just loved Helena Bohnam Carter, she’s superb, George and Georgina were both neat, and the kid who played Charlie (who’s off Finding Neverland as well, right?) was perfect.
I wonder why they brought in a dad for Charlie though? Allthough the toothpaste thing was kind of cute.
Whoa, WEIRD!! I saw the IMAX version yesterday. I liked it, but I’m still a sucker for the Gene Wilder version. Loved Johnny Depp (again, WEIRD!), and Freddy Highmore was a fantastic Charlie - better than the original if you ask me. Bright colors and sets = awesome, & I would expect nothing less from Tim Burton. The elevator was cool because you got to see some different parts of the factory. But no bubble-room scene! That was always one of my favorite freaky parts about the first movie, when Charlie & his grandpa are floating up to the fan in the ceiling. I was waiting to see how they would do that & then it never happened. The kids were all great. I didn’t feel sorry for Violet’s character at all. She was the most annoying one, IMO. I got a kick out of her mother, the same bug-eyed lady in Big Fish. In the first movie it did seem like Augustus Gloop was more deserving of his fate, but ah well. The boat scene wasn’t nearly as scary as the first movie (which I could barely even stand to watch when I was younger).
The Oompa Loompas were awesome! I LOVED the dancing! I’m still trying to get over Johnny Depp’s hair though.
The only parts that really threw me were the flashbacks to Wonka’s childhood. That subplot didn’t really jive well with me and just seemed unnecessary and out of place.
As far as the kids in my theatre, there weren’t very many. I suspect most parents aren’t willing to shell out $10 for each of their kids to see an IMAX movie (which might be a little intense for some kids anyway). There was one little girl behind me who was about 2-3 years old. She was yapping throughout the entire movie, which was thoroughly annoying. She only cried during Veruca’s scene.
Overall, bravo. The Burton/Depp/Elfman combo can do no wrong.
