Teaser trailer for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Johnny Depp is scaring me. What do you guys think of it? I haven’t decided just yet. I’m leaning towards pretty nifty, though.

Ugh.

I have a feeling that this is going to be a critical and commercial flop. I thought it was a bad idea to remake this from the beginning, and this trailer bears out my fears.

Depp looks like a cross between the transvestite in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Marilyn Manson.

It looks like a horror film. Hell, maybe it is a horror film. If so, then it works.

It looks…well a lot like the original, but with more CGI.

I really don’t see any reason to revisist the original. It has held up well, and I don’t really see how it can be improved by updating the special effects.

I saw the trailer yesterday. I don’t know what to make of the movie yet; it doesn’t look markedly different from the '70’s version, perhaps a little more creepy. But I’m wondering if I’ll ever get that song out of my head now.

I definitely want to see a creepier version of the story.

A creepier story would definitely be more true to the book. I admit, I’m looking forward to this more than any 30 year old woman should in polite company. But, yeah, I’m sort of disappointed that the art design looks so similar to the old version. I expected more…darkness from Tim Burton. Where’s all the grey and black?

I’m a bit disappointed. I don’t think the trailer looked creepy at all. I suppose the shot of Mike Teevee - wonder if they’ll change it to Veegee - could have been aimed at being disturbing. Might’ve just been the music though. I worry that Tim Burton has excised all the obvious darkness in the story to make some bright, cheerful, and happy version.

As a kid, I kind of understood that there may be something deeply wrong with Willie Wonka thanks in part to the director and Gene Wilders brilliant performance. You knew that if you stepped out of line, something bad was going to happen. It’s just a teaser and all, but I didn’t get that feeling from this Wonka.

Still, Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, and the possible sodomizing of a cherished childhood classic for profit; I’ll pony up the money to take the family.

Well, Burton had to have a flop after the wonderfulness that was Big Fish, so I’ll forgive him. From the trailer, Willie Wonka… does not look like a masterpiece. However, I’ll withhold judgment for now. I do kind of wish they’d have managed to get Marilyn Manson as Wonka, though.

That said, no one will ever, ever, ever top Gene Wilder.

Gene Wilder is a durned hard act to follow.

Then again, Johnny Depp’s no slouch. And they got Danny Elfman for the music.

I’ll take a chance on it.

Willy Wonka and the Dark Chocolate Factory?

Bear in mind that Burton isn’t remaking the 1971 film; he’s going back to the source material to film a version of Roald Dahl’s book. And because it’s Tim Burton, the film may be great (or not), but it’s guaranteed to be visually fascinating.

Is he going to keep the Oompah Loompahs as they are portrayed in the book, or he is going to be more PC. Since it’s Burton, I hope it’s like the book.

What was un-PC about the Oompah Loompahs? I haven’t read the book.

Stumpy little midgets from Africa, slaving away for Massa Wonka?

Gaahhh! Stoopid song! Get out of my head!

Do they actually address him as “Massa Wonka”?

And are they actually called slaves? Or are they employees?

Out of your head and right ito mine. :smack:

I just did an Amazon search through the novel. Oompa-Loompas (note spelling) are from the jungles of Loompaland. They are knee high and have long hair. They are not described as dark skinned. They are employees who by agreement with their tribal leader are paid in their beloved cacao beans. The men Oompa-Loompas wear deerskins, the women wear leaves, and the children wear nothing.
