Charlie Sheen name change...

Yeah…so they did put that name in the trailer, but he’s not going to start using it, is he? Do you have a cite for the name change?

Here is the clip of the trailer at the relevant part.

He’s using it in Machete Kills, but no, apparently there is no solid word about whether the change is permanent or simply to preserve the overall Mexican atmosphere of the film. Hadn’t considered the gimmick angle to be quite honest.

That said, when your name is your brand and your resume it is questionable benefit to change it to suit the flavor of a movie. How many times do you think you can get away with that? John ((Cougar)(-)(Mellencamp)) is an example of a celebrity who pulled it off, Snoop Lion maybe not so much. Charlie Sheen is a bit of a tainted name, and I doubt Hollywood will be easily confused about whom they’re dealing with no matter what he calls himself. But maybe the guy is looking to reinvent himself in a different market, who knows? Maybe he’s just batshit Charlie Sheen doing whatever the hell he wants and interpreting the result as winning.

he changed his name because he’s trying to get away from this crazy lady.

Obama’s part Irish. More proof of the conspiracy!

That’s O’Bama.

I think it’s a joke. Have you seen Machete? It’s pretty much camp.

There’s No One as Irish as Barack Obama.

I thought the name change was to Puff Sheen.

Martin has mentioned in interviews he regrets having had to use the Sheen stage name in order to have more roles available. But he should not feel bad, he probably would have been more limited by going on as Estevez. Not everyone can try to be José Ferrer.

Charlie OTOH used the Sheen because his father did, while Emilio stuck with the Estevez from the start. We’ll have to see if this sticks or will be project-specific.

And come on, it’s a Machete movie. Ridiculous is expected.

Charlie Sheen is badass, even moreso since he’s a fan of my Cincinnati Reds! You cannot keep Charlie down. Do not try, or torpedoes of truth will hamper your vain efforts.

He could have changed it to Afro Sheen.

Shouldn’t he be a Cleveland fan? He did play for them after all.

So he is The “Artist” Formely Known As Carlos Estevez, Then Known As Charlie Batshit Insane Sheen And Now Back To Carlos Estevez.

I always wondered about stage names. Are most stage names only for credits, or are they changed legally? If the former, does that mean that checks from the production company/studio to the actor would be made out to Carlos Estevez all these years?

The entire Estévez clan retained their birth names as legal names and the “Sheen” was always just a stage name. According to the elder Sheen in his James Lipton interview, his license, passport, etc. have always read “Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez”.

Although he’s Irish on his mother’s side he did not adopt his mother’s surname as a stage name , but rather borrowed Bishop Fulton Sheen’s. A lot of Stage Names are assembled from parts of the family name that is not normally part of Angloamerican naming convention (e.g. mother’s maiden name), or firstname-middlenames, or anglicizing and/or abbreviating one or more of the names. Thus Margarita Cansino Hayworth becomes Rita Hayworth, Antonio R. Quinn Oaxaca (his father Francisco Quinn was Irish-Mexican) becomes Anthony Quinn, Richard Valenzuela becomes Richie Valens.
Sometimes the stage name does get legally adopted but for most cases, you either get paid in your real name, or you go to a bank familiar with the entertainment business and create an account to Real Name DBA Stage Name so you can deposit checks made to Stage Name.

For a while people with noticeably “ethnic” names, or even names that were just unglamorous, would be expected by the studios or agents almost as a matter of course to assume a stage name that would look better on posters or appeal more to Middle American audiences.

Machete used the credit “And introducing Don Johnson”. The whole thing is tongue-in-cheek and not to be taken seriously.
