Last night, Charisma Carpenter’s evil oracle character was using Weadonspeak. Is one of their writers typecasting Charisma into her old speech pattern, or did they actually pick up an out-of-work Mutant Enemy writer?
By the way, Charisma Carpenter is totally a Mother I Like Lookin’ At.
She’s just been in the past two episodes, I don’t think she’ll become a regular, Otto. The fact that she’s appearing on the show at the same time as Kerr Smith, a la Dawson’s Creek and Nick LeChey (sp?) a la The Newlyweds, implies she either really lowered her standards, or has lost her damned mind.
I don’t think that CC is really in a position to pick her projects. Much as we knowledgeable people love her, she was a supporting player on a cult hit and its moderately-rated spin-off, from which she was fired. Not exactly the ideal resume.
Accounts differ. The rumor is that the show was no longer CC’s first priority, taking a back seat to her new family. Her pregnancy forced the Angel writers to completely rework the S4 arc because Cordelia had been planned to be the season’s Big Bad. She also was not in several episodes of S3. When Angel was almost cancelled after S4, ME brought Spike on to the show and allegedly had to make room for Marsters in the budget so they let CC go (although that might just be a cover story Whedon used to spare CC the embarassment of being officially fired for cause).
Others who followed the show at the time all this happened might have more information.
I’ve been watching Angel on DVD (never saw it on TV) and I saw S3 just a couple of months ago. That 3-episode arc without Cordy was so obvious, and I remember wondering when she returned if she was already pregnant, because she looked as if she’d gained 15 pounds in about 4 weeks.
I am glad that Cordy didn’t end up being the S4 Big Bad. I think that would’ve been terrible. I have S4 coming soon, so I’m eager to see what they ended up doing with her.
Just did a bit more digging at the IMDB - the only writer listed for last night, episode ‘styx feet under’ was Henry Alonso Myers, who has no credits at all except for charmed (story editor positions in seasons 5 and 6, 7 various episodes) and three episodes of ‘the chronicle’
I heard a different story about Charisma and “Angel”. I heard that throughout season 4 she was treated like crap for getting pregnant (probably because her condition forced writers to tinker with episodes last minute). Once she gave birth, she was on set within days.
Going into season 5, she apparently asked for a more lenient schedule so she could raise her child. Joss & Co. said they couldn’t give her that schedule and let her go. A lot of fans were outraged and blamed the addition of Spike to the cast for Charisma’s firing. The rumors I’ve heard were that she wasn’t very reliable (i.e. suddenly showing up on set with her hair chopped/dyed and not knowing her lines) and had to deal with personal problems in season 3.
Also, her addition to “Charmed” might be linked to meeting Holly Marie Combs on “See Jane Date” (my own personal theory).
But they could soooooooo use someone to thumb through their scripts and make sure they don’t do things they said they couldn’t two episodes ago, makes the original Star Trek look like it had no holes in its logic.
But then again, I watch too. Damn you Milano and your slutty attire.
I never watched in on Sundays first-run but when I was out of work I ended up watching it, because it was on after Angel and I couldn’t find the remote. I hated it. Hated it. Doherty can’t act. Milano can’t act. McGowan has discovered the secret of anti-acting. Combs can act (see Picket Fences) but for some perverse reason almost always chooses not to. Krause can’t act and he keeps his clothes on thus refusing to display his talent. The only worthwhile thing about that show was Julian McMahon who not only could act but doffed his kit on a fairly regular basis.
Yet I watched it every day until I’d seen all of the episodes in syndication. And I suffered. Oh lord, how I suffered. I suffered through Piper turning into a wendigo. I suffered through Phoebe turning into a mermaid. I suffered through Paige turning into a miniature. I suffered through Phoebe turning into the Queen of the Night. I suffered through the monkey witches. I suffered excrutiatingly through all of them turning into Greek goddesses.
Awful plots, terrible acting, ludicrous special effects, gaps in logic trucks could drive through, just overall a horrible horrible viewing experience.
But I could not look away. I had to keep watching just to see how horrific it would become. Every time I thought it couldn’t get any worse, damn if they didn’t manage to top theire previous awfulness. It’s like the creators took some bizarre joy in throwing huge loads of poo onto the airwaves just to see if people would actually fall for it.
And this fetid pile of steaming dog vomit is still on the air while AtS was killed.
