Lurking about for a bit, I see some references to a chat room, yet when I try to access it through SD home page I get a message saying that chat is down. Am I missing the real party ?

I’ve had the best luck accessing it through mIRC (which I downloaded especially for that purpose.) Once you get mIRC you have to set it to an undernet server and go to the room #straightdope. Someone else might know a less confusing way.

Your best bet is to get mIRC as was previously suggested and then point your server towards the Undernet servers. From there, hit connect and then:
/join #StraightDope
once you’re on the server. Voila! You’re in #SD!
