Ok, so I know breaking news stories go here in MPSIMS so if this needs to be moved please do so.
News reports indicate the jury in the trial of Derek Chauvin have reached a verdict and it will be read shortly.
Does the fact the jury reached a verdict so quickly indicate a greater likelihood of conviction or acquittal typically?
IIRC, generally a fast verdict means guilty.
I’ve heard of one murderer who was convicted after just 30 seconds of jury deliberation, or something like that.
My guess is that manslaughter is about the only charge they likely would have reached unanimously in this relatively short period of time.
I agree that it will be manslaughter. I sure don’t want to see what will happen if it’s not guilty.
This is certainly breaking news, but remember, no political swipes here. You may want to open a topic in a different category, as I expect people will want to say political things. Maybe there’s already a P&E topic for that?
IMHO has an ongoing thread.
Mods can feel free to move if this is better suited to GD or MPSIMS.
I didn’t see a thread to follow along the trial, so here’s one. I found the dispatcher’s testimony yesterday compelling – I hadn’t known about her alarm about what she saw prior to this.
That should be good for the more debate side of this horrible story.
My thanks to Czarcasm for the link.
Count 1: Guilty 2nd degree murder
Count 2: Guilty 3rd degree Murder
Count 3: Guilty 2nd degree man-slaughter.
second degree murder: guilty
third degree murder: guilty
second degree manslaughter: guilty
And a bit of faith in humanity is restored…
jurors sound confident of their verdicts
I checked P & E but didn’t look in IMHO. Sorry.
If you feel it necessary go ahead and close this or merge them or whatever you think best.
judge thanks jurors, who were not on camera and were only referred to by number. Says that he will answer their questions privately in a few minutes.
I think this is fine, it is the breaking news thread. But not my forum so they might close or merge this one into a prior thread.
This is fine for the breaking news part
Big national sigh of relief.
Chauvin’s bail revoked and he is taken into custody.
I’m assuming PROTECTIVE custody…
And now my phone is buzzing with news alerts.
I’m shocked. I am glad I didn’t bet money.
