I’m not sure if this is GQ or MPSIMS so moderator please move it if needed. Anyhow, are shoe laces getting ‘cheaper’ or something? More specifically, have they been doing something the last few years that makes them less likely to stay tied?
I found another thread about shoe laces that become untied once in the AM and then staying tied, but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’ve noticed for a couple years now that shoe laces, whether dress- or sports-style, just don’t stayed tied. No matter how well I tie them they will untie multiple times during the day.
I don’t think it’s diminished capability on my part, and a couple people I’ve asked about it have said they’ve seen the same thing. I’ve taken to just double-tying them.
My guess would be they’re using some different less expensive material in shoe laces (some plastic?) that is slipprier and doesn’t hold as well.
Maybe it’s the shoes that have changed, but I’d be more suspicious of the laces as a sort of ‘common denominator’.
No problem here. I tie them in a bow knot, same as a square knot with the end tucked back where comes thru the bow.
If that fails to work get some E-6000 clear glue. Really sticks things together to stay.
More to the OP: Round/stylish laces come undone fairly quickly, whereas the older flat cotton laces wrenched down pretty tight (friction and all that).
There’s a new advance in laces that keeps them tied. My new pair of New Balance 766 shoes came with special laces. They’re round in section, but there it a bulge every half-inch or so. They don’t come untied, and the laces don’t shift from one eyelet to another.
I had an early pair of Air Jordans that had a plastic slider latch on the laces, in case you couldn’t Tyron Shoelaces.
“She had a west coast strut that was sweet as molasses,
But what really knocked me out was her cheap shoelaces.” --Apologies to ZZ Top
Modern shoelaces are made with a cotton/polyester blend. The polyester makes the shoelaces last longer but prevent the knot from staying tight. Remember the days when shoes outlasted the shoelaces, not it’s just the opposite. My latest pair of New Balance shoes refused to stayed tied, I found a pair of Nomex laces made for driving shoes and haven’t had the problem since.
