Check Point in US Post Office

When I walk into my post office, I pass between two white objects(columns) that say check point. Are these scanners, and if so, what do they detect?

WAG: Metal detectors?

Is there a federal courtroom in your post office? It could be a security station that’s only used when court is in session.

Whether or not you are wearing a FedEx or UPS uniform.

They might be RFID antennae. Some stores use them to track merchandise or deter shoplifting.

Given that its a post office, it might also be a metal detector.

If it’s a metal detector, does that mean I can’t bring a package containing a large metallic object for shipping??

(I suspect it’s RFID, same as the anti-theft sensors you find in other types of stores.)

Two questions then:

Why pass through on entering?

What post office has stealable merchandise sitting in front of the counter?

I would think the big, industrial metal detectors would be on the EMPLOYEE entrance of the Post Office.

Our local post offices have a lot of merchandise that could be easily stolen including packing materials and other items. Nothing all that expensive though.

It’s a shoplifting deterrent. My local post office has a retail section with things like tape, bubble wrap, boxes, etc. for sale.

I’ve never bought anything there, so I don’t know if the Checkpoint portal is active, or if it’s just a visual deterrent to make someone think twice before trying to steal a roll of tape.

If the is only one door, the answer is self-evident. If there are two doors, both must be accessible as either in or out. Hence, cover the in door as well.

Back in the early 1970’s (or late 1960’s?) there was a rash of crazy people hijacking Post Offices to Cuba. After that, they had Sky Marshals posted in a great many Post Offices, until the scanner technology was developed. It’s handled by the TSA these days, so be sure to arrive at the Post Office a good two or three hours before you plan to mail your parcel, and wear easy-to-remove shoes.
