When I was in high school I had a science teacher who supplied very useful aphorisms to help us remember important facts. “My Very Early Model Jaguar Still Uses Neptunes Petrol” being the one I still refer to most often. Another was ELO is a ROC band. Gives you an idea of my vintage. Now I know that ELO means “Electron Loss is Oxidation” but I can not remember what ROC means. Therein lies the flaw of the method. Remember the message but not the meaning. Any ideas ??
Not sure about ROC. **LEO GER ** (as in the sound lions make, or Lose Electrons, Oxidized; Gain Electrons, Reduced) works for me.
I learned “LEO says GER” in high school as well.
Later on, I picked up the simpler “OIL RIG.” (Oxidation is loss [of electrons]; reduction is gain.)
No idea what ROC stands for, but I bet the “R” stands for reduction.
