Oh yeah, forgot to ask – which character did David Duchovny play? I watched Twin Peaks pretty much from start to finish, and I often spot many actors and actresses elsewhere that I remember from the show, but I have absolutely no memory of Duchovny in it.
Duchovney played DEA agent Denise Bryson.
Who still puts his pants on one leg at a time.
Goddam, I loved this show. My friend and I used to call each other up after every episode and try to figure out what the hell was going on. BOB is still one of the most terrifying entities to ever hit the screen; the shots of him lurking by the foot of Laura’s bed still freak me out. I have the series on VHS, and I believe on Halloween weekend I might hold a viewing like Bravo used to do, years ago.
I thought the show was one of the best things ever shown in network TV, though it was quite clear from the beginning that it could only lose viewers as time went on (the plot was so complex that it would be impossible for new viewers to figure out what was happening).
As for the ending, I can’t believe that so many people completely missed what was going on: The episode was never intended to be the series finale. It was intended to be the season finale, setting up a cliffhanger to be dealt with the next year. Cooper was possessed by BOB, so that would be the next year’s story line. There was never any intention for that to be the end, but ABC killed the series, then promoted the show as the series finale. And you believed them.
Amazing, amazing, amazing show. I’ve heard David Lynch say that he could have wrapped it all up and tied all the loose ends if only he’d got two more hours. So why the flying fuckaroo didn’t he make a movie about that instead of the prequel (that I haven’t seen, by the way)?
Oh yeah, cinema-goers who hadn’t seen the show would be mightily confused. But who cares about them?
Count me as a big fan. I really hope the DVDs of the 2nd season eventually come out here in the US, as my husband has never seen the show and is tired of me pointing to the TV as we flip channels and yelling, “Hey! Hank Jennings!” or whoever.
Damn, now I want some pie.
The studio and the producer among others.
The show is probably my favourite TV show ever. The secondary material that was put out was great - The Laura Palmer diary, the Agent Cooper tapes, added to the character development. One more season would have been very nice to tie up all the story lines.
I’d like to see Lynch do TV again. I never saw On the Air but I understand that was a pretty good show as well.
Anybody else have an issue of the magazine Wrapped in Plastic?
My favorite TV show ever!
Thanks for the link. I hadn’t seen this.
My husband and I used to read and sometimes participate in that newsgroup! It was great because people from all over would get references and post them immediately. You wouldn’t have to wait months, or years, to get some obscure reference (like the Wizard of Oz tidbit already mentioned). I think I still have a.f.tp archives on an old Amiga hard disk somewhere.
Eq (still pining for alt.suicide.holiday, and the glory days of rec.music.gaffa)
It was a mixed bag. I’ll be charitable and say that Lynch has…difficulty…with comedy, or at least with stuff that’s actually supposed to be comedic in format. There were flashes of brilliance in OTA (The Hurry-Up Twins and Blinky to name a couple, and Betty singing the Mister Peanut song always chokes me up) but for the most part it was a mess. Which isn’t to say it’s not worth renting or buying if you can get it cheap.
I used to have close to a complete run. I had a letter published once, challenging the publishers on some point about Laura’s being bad because she was a prostitute and by implication all sex workers are bad people. It’s been close to a decade so I don’t remember what exactly put me into a dudgeon about it. I also commented on their discussion of vampirism imagery in the series and added some thoughts about lycanthropy imagery. I sold them off a few years back on eBay and made a good chunk of profit on them. I sort of wish I had them again but no big, I have a couple issues left that didn’t sell.
Creepier still was the 2nd season ep where BOB possesses Leland again and tells Maddie, “You’re going back to Missoula, MONTANA!” and proceeds to slam her face into a picture frame. Still upsetting after 13 years.
Hop on your motorcycle, Johnny L.A. and head on down to North Bend. The cafe with the damn fine pie is still there on the corner.
I have a pair of VHS tapes put out by Revok that were copied from a Japanese LaserDisc. I also have a DVD copied from the Japanese LaserDiscs that I picked up on eBay.
I have to disagree with *Otto. On The Air is brilliant!
North Bend is over 130 miles away from here. I’d really have to be jonesing for cherry pie and coffee to make that trip!
ANd not too far from there you can see Mt Si (Twin Peaks) and the Salish Lodge and Snoqualme Falls, used for all the scenes of the lodge.
It seems like I remember staying home from a Sacramento Kings home game (season ticket holding rabid fan at the time) to watch the final episode. Yeah, I had a VCR, but it just had to be seen first time around.
Peggy Lipton was fine. Mmmmmm. I bet she still is.
