Chess game: MindWanderer vs Glee

Yes, but glee still has a D & E file pawn. Mindwanderer’s empty D file is worth the exchange.

Is it wrong to mix gummy worms and corn chips?

He may have those availble but he has no pawn structure to support any sort of attack. His pawn on c is going to become less valuable when glee eventually castles king side. At this point any attempt to move a knight up into a position supported by that pawn will be swifty rebuked by one of Glee’s pawns. Glee has taken the initiative from white and can now force the action at his (her?) pleasure.

I predict that glee will move e5 challenging Mindwander’s knight. Mindwander will either move his knight up (Bad Mindwander!) or be forced to retreat. Glee will be free to move his bishop out to open up castling or perhaps develop his d pawn or his other knight (llama).

Horribly wrong, pass the gummy worms over.

Nonsense, it is the sublimest of joys, as I can even now attest. And I think 3.g3 would have been terrible; the fiancetto’d bishop wouldn’t have been worth the time.

I’m inclined to agree. After 1. d4, Nf6; 2. c4, c5; 3. g3, Black has 3. … cxd4; 4. Qxd4, Nc6; and while Black doesn’t have a centre pawn for the time being, he gains time kicking the WQ about, can play …Qa5 at a convenient time, and choose how to set up his centre at his leisure. There isn’t anything in particular for White to point his g2 bishop at.

flirts shamelessly with Taran

I’ll have a gummy worm!

MW glee

  1. d4 Nf6
  2. c4 c5
  3. Nf3 cxd4
  4. Nxd4 b6

I intend to develop my bishop on b7. (This is known as a fianchetto).

d5 is the most popular move in that position.
dxc5 allows me to recapture the pawn - better is Nf3 which brings another piece out.

g3 is a very compatible idea with c4, but you should defend the d4 pawn first.

  1. d4 Nf6

  2. c4 c5

  3. g3 cxd4

  4. Qxd4 Nc6 gains time for Black, while

  5. d4 Nf6

  6. c4 c5

  7. g3 cxd4

  8. Nf3 e5!?

  9. Nxe5? Qa5+ wins for Black!

For goodness sake!
This is not a ball game!!
Put those crunchy chips in that rustling packet AWAY!

First the mobile phone, now this.

Clearly you have no idea about chessplayers…
We are mainly shy geeky nerdy males, who would be distracted simply by a woman walking by.
Soda on other hand is edible. Therefore we understand how to deal with it. (Slurp!)

This is a fair point.

Although White can develop more rapidly, I have **no weaknesses ** for him to attack. I have exchanged a key central pawn, so am not under pressure there.

I also have played this particular position several times, so have a good idea what to expect.

No worries. As I said in the other thread, I’ll be happy to play you once one of my current games finishes!

Although I am happy with my position, I do not have the initiative. The advantage of the first move lingers on.

e5 is a risky concept. Although it forces the knight to move, it weakens d5.

A previous game of mine continued:

  1. d4 Nf6

  2. c4 c5

  3. Nf3 cxd4

  4. Nxd4 b6

  5. Nc3 Bb7

  6. f3 d6

  7. e4 e6

All correct  except for the last point.
The g2 bishop points at the b7 pawn, the centre squares e4 + d5 (and the a8 rook). This bishop is often one of White’s most effective pieces in this sort of opening.

No wonder male chess players lack confidence with females:

  • I start the game (good  )
  • intelligent female spectator turns up (very good  )
  • she makes phone call (bad :frowning: )
  • she throws soda over me (is she … flirting? )
  • she flirts with spectator (typical  )

Right, then… flirts absolutely shamelessly with glee, loves a man with brains

A woman is actually flirting with me!

What do I do?

Offer to show her my home ‘pawn’ collection?
Discuss ‘mating positions’?

There’s nothing in my chess books about this…

(Passes Glee the gummy worms)
Pssst…Offer her one!

This is the first game I’ve watched on the boards here. Definitely more fun than playing my cat. (She’s fantastic with her openings & pawn structues but tends to blow it in the endgame).

Point taken. And it’s not like I didn’t go around playing 1. … g6 a lot when I was playing league chess.

(The mediocre club player deigns to agree with the IM  )

This may be another example of a common language dividing us. Is offering a chap* a ‘gummy worm’ considered respectful?

*over this side of the pond, everyone can be called a chap…

MW glee

  1. d4 Nf6
  2. c4 c5
  3. Nf3 cxd4
  4. Nxd4 b6
  5. Nc3

How come all the ruckus is going on in this thread? It’s like a tomb over in ours.

Where’s the jealous smilie?
