Chevy Chase's humour

I don’t know. Piven, at least in his Entourage roll, is more overtly aggressive and belligerant. His humor is derived from the fact that he’s a control freak and he starts getting ever more and more worked up as the situation spirals out of his control.

Chase, Reynods, Vaugn, Bateman and Penn all have kind of a similar vibe. For the most part, they always appear to be in control. Everyone else gets worked up around them but they are usually infuriatingly calm. Mostly just making non sequitor remarks, ironic or sarcastic mocking comments under their breath or flipant observations. I don’t know if it’s self-depracating. They tend to come off as pretty arrogant. As if everyone else around them is an idiot and they are somehow above it all. It’s humorous because everyone around them generally are pompous idiots and take themselves way to seriously and it’s funny to see them taken down a peg with the verbal equivalent of a pie to the face.
A classic example would be from Blade Trinity where Renolds is describing their special rifles to Blade and finishes with “…it doesn’t have the range of…a sword.” Or when he tells Blade “…and another thing…every once and awhile you might want to try…blinking.”

I’d call it “Smartass”.

What about Leslie Nielsen in Police Squad? Neilsen plays his characters completely straight.

Norm MacDonald. He’s the only one Chevy felt did Weekend Update right.

Yeah, I was thinking of the Naked Gun moves. Very similar exchanges, the only difference being Neilson’s character doesn’t know he’s giving smartass answers.
