I don’t get something, Chicago Reader is still a magazine by itself right? And the magazine owns straight dope, so does creativeloafers, or whatever it’s called, own chicago reader which then owns straight dope?
anyways I read a quote from them that they want to preserve straight dope and it’s website.
I thought by publishing that just meant a place where they don’t have much control but put it out there into public. But I suppose it’s not like a book publisher.
Seems to me that TUBA is the one doing the speculating here. Either she knows something or she doesn’t but please don’t make any promises if promises are not yours to make.
Yeah, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for this place. I’ve yet to find another board this full of wit and amusing people, or a better receptacle for venting. 'Cause, you know, it feels better to vent when you actually get replies consisting of more than “n’est pas” or “lolll, omg, ur sad. too fucking bad, hah i ryme”
So, yeah. Fingers crossed and all, though I can very vividly imagine a re-launching of the SDMB into a more glitzy, flashy shell of it’s old self.
Hmm, you create an interesting question, Gukumatz - how much “curmudgeon” does it take to outweigh “glitzy and flashy?” Could the weight of our universal disapproval sink things like animated sig lines?
Only with much stern glancing about and many Harrumphs.
If the glitz is allowed, I for one would lobby hard to have a Block All Glitz ( BAG ) option. You want glitz? Fine. Put on your pimpin’ finery and tart up our boards.
You want The Straight Dope? Put the glitz in the BAG.
Way to go me! I finally decide to actually toss some cash at this board, and only -then- do I read this thread.
Just out of curiosity, though, don’t the new Loafing overlords maintain certain responsibilities to the subscribers of the board? There’s nothing in the rules (that I can see) that state that the Reader retained the right to shut everything down and kick everyone off the boards. Would CL then be contractually responsible for refunding prorated portions of subscription fees?
Wishful thinking makes me think that if they had to pay back money they hadn’t actually received, that that might be something in our favor…
Well-well look. I already told you: I deal with the god damn customers so the engineers don’t have to. I have people skills; I am good at dealing with people. Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?
