Driving from Michigan to Madison WI today. Will probably hit the Skyway in Indiana about 5pm.
I assume the Skyway is the way to go… please correct me if I’m wrong.
My main dilemma is heading N thru Milwaukee and then over… or NW thru Rockford and up. I think the latter is a little shorter but rush hour traffic could be the wildcard.
That part won’t be so bad - you’ll be moving against the rush hour. The 5:30-6:00 leg north out of the city, however…honestly, you might be better off scheduling yourself a dinner break about then and continuing on after 6:30. You’ll get there in the same time without the stress. Friday outbound rush hour sucks, and it starts at about 4:00.
Going towards Rockford won’t really make any difference - it’s outbound rush hour whether you take 90 or 94. Personally, I’d just stay on 94. According to Google maps, there’s less than 2 miles difference between the routes (assuming you’re talking about doing Skyway -->90/94 --> 90 --> 294 --> 94 vs Skyway -->94 all the way.) and no difference in their time estimate (which does not take rush hour into account, of course.) I think, but I’m not sure, that you’ll also save a bit in tolls staying on 94.
Eh, you can go a little further than that (unless you like barbeque - for barbeque, stay south and follow your nose). Personally, I’d duck into Greektown or Taylor Street (Little Italy), but then you might not want to leave! Chinatown is very close to the highway as well. None of them are dangerous on a Friday evening unless you’re monumentally stupid.
Chicago Reader has a good Restaurant Guide. Anywhere in their “Downtown” or “CITY- West” categories will work for you. CITY-West is more likely to have parking, either in free lots or meters on the street. Downtown is all expensive parking garages.
If you decide to go through Milwaukee, be aware that the ramp connecting I-94/43N to I-94W towards Madison is closed due to construction. Check out the Marquette Interchange guide for alternate directions.
Take I-90 to Madison. It will be tougher till you get past O’Hare but from there it’s a lot easier with a lot less State troopers.
As for food, tell me what you want and I will give you some suggestions. If I was stopping along the Highway for one meal, I’d either hit Chinatown (Lao Sze Chuan in particular) or Jim’s Original at the Roosevely exit for the best Polish sausage you’ve ever had alongside some truly mediocre fries for just a couple bucks.
Double Li is AMAZING! I was there for an LTH dinner, make sure you get the fish in szechuan sauce and the black pepper garlic beef. Wish I could join you but I have to be at a clients’ in Evasnton at 530
