Don’t worry Christi, i’ll take care of ya, and I only have a couple of minor convictions against my name

Cristi, if you’re not going to do anything stupid…you’re not invited.

Yay Cristi! It will be a redhead reunion

Yep… I booked a flight and I am appearing in the midwest. All you undecideds make up your minds… can you risk missing ME?

I am a redhead, you see, and I do not tempt. I insist. -Cristi

Actually, if the hubby and I do end up attending, he wants to fly there. The thought of driving for six hours is something that neither one of us looks forward to. I did some searching on the internet and most airlines offer round-trip tickets from Detroit to Chicago for 70-75 dollars for each person. We are still in the “discussion stage” regarding this trip, however.

Shadowfox: $75 for a plane ticket?

Hm. Maybe I’ll fly.

What’s better to do, though, once I get there? Rent a vehicle, or throw myself upon the tender mercies of the rest of the Dopers for transportation?

I just realized something. These questions have got to sound really ignorant. Truth is, I’ve never travelled by myself. I’ve never had to really plan anything.

Okay, you can stop laughing now.

Cristi…Chicago is a cake walk for transportation.

The el runs very often to both airports, when you book a flight any one of the locals can hook you up with a schedule and some simple instructions. As for getting around the city, you can depend on Dopers to pick you up and get to the bar, but I persoanlly plan on parking and taking a cab everywhere. We won’t be staying/meeting any where that is going to be more than a $6 cab ride. If you want to go from the hotel to the loop or the museum campus the el is simple, and easy. All in all, public transportation is nothing to fret about.

Also there are taxi shuttles into the city from the airport that run ~$20-30. The shuttles are easy, and take you right to the door, and are useful w/ luggage. You can take the el for $1.50 a person, and depending on where the hotel is, you may or may not need a block or two walk to the hotel. Depending on how light you pack and how big a deal $25 is, use that to decide.

Omni, I’d go so far as to say that unless you arrive and there’s surprisingly little traffic (unlikely friday night), take the el anyway and cab it from downtown. Cheaper and at least as quick if not quicker.

So, I’ve got the el, cabs, shuttles, & Dopers to get me around. Cool.

So then, I should a)pack light, 6)not worry so much, and ii)bring cash, to bribe my Doper friends into shuttling me around. Got it. I feel much more secure now. Thanks!

Meg, call me stupid if you want, but I think we’re meeting in Chicago.

But… but… Barbados is so lovely this time of year.

Please add me to the list.

If you fly in you should definitely take the El into the city no matter where your hotel is. It’s cheaper, faster and more convenient than having to wait in line for a cab.

Also, you should never buy a ticker directly from an airline. ALWAYS go through a travel agent.

FWIW I vote we pick one place and stay there. It would be a real pain in the rectum to attempt to navigate people unfamiliar with the city from location to location on queue.
