It takes you that long? I can figure it out as soon as I see the credits on the movie poster/ad/video box.
Billdo:
Great capsule of the “chick flick” genre, though you missed a very important point in number 2: the “romantic” guy is a sympathetic guy who could use a little TLC.
Ref. Sleepless in Seattle, where Meg Ryan falls for Tom Hanks just by the sound of his voice and her sympathy for his sob story.
It’s the “mothering” instinct that these chick flicks play to.
Sometime in 1995 or '96, I had my first experience with chick flicks. I was in seventh grade, and grew up in a family that would rather see action, comedy, or horror. A friend invites me to go with her and a couple of other friends to see Bed of Roses (said friend was a Christian Slater junkie, as I recall).
By the end of the movie, friend and others (including friend’s Mom) are crying so hard that their mascara has melted into raccoon eye-rings. Me? I’m laughing so hard that I nearly spray Dr. Pepper all over the back of the seat in front of me.
Friend was not amused. And I still don’t like chick flicks. Ah, the joys of friendship…
