Chicken Advice & Knowledge

Hi. Do you have chickens? Do you know about chickens? Can you recommend a good website with a question format for chicken information?

I have chickens. They were here when we rented the property. We have no idea how old they are or anything much about them. (Although we have learned that chickens only have one hole: the cloaca, from which poop, pee and eggs all emerge. We wash our eggs. Throughly.)

What I do know is that two of them have died within the last two weeks. One after a long decline, the other pretty suddenly. What is their lifespan? What might they have died from? Where cna I learn more about chickens?

www.poultryconnection.com - they have a great poultry forum to ask questions, etc. (I raised ducks and geese)

Hope this helps, let me know if you need more information.

Find a large animal vet. A small animal vet ought to be able to give you a name.

“Love given when it is inconvenient is the greatest love of all. Kindnesses that are shared at a high cost to oneself are the most dear.”

Don’t know who said it, but I like it.

I’ll eat them…I hear they taste just like - Oh, nevermind!

Yer pal,
Satan

Stoidela-- I haven’t checked the links Jazzmine provided–I’m sure they’re helpful and have what you need. But also, your state university probably has an extension program regarding the raising of poultry that includes a professor who is there to answer all questions poultry. Tell 'em you’re a farmer and you have this problem.

very good idea 647! I didn’t even think of it. I always use my extension office for all things agricultural/farming. Okay, mostly for all things duck/geese/gardening.

Thanks, y’all! ‘preciate yer takin’ the time to help this green poultry farmer (hmm…5 chickens. Maybe poultry gardner?).

Latest chicken mystery (which may in a way solve the first one) yesterday there were no eggs. it had been two days. My hunny found what appeared for all the world to be CAT POOP in one of the nests. Might have been some other kinda poop, but it was SOME kinda mammalian poop from an approximately cat-sized animal. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

The first chicken was ill for quite awhile. The second one seemed to die suddenly. but in neither case was there any apparant injury. No blood, nothing looked broken. If an animal killed them, it did so for fun, cuz it didn’t try to eat them.

I think the second chicken migh thave died of fright if there was something in the henhouse.

It’s all very mysterious.
