ChiDoper Drunken Debauchery in a Beer Garden - August 25th

I’m in! Looking forward to the debauchery. And possibly dancing on bars.

I had Dim Sum in San Fran a few years ago and had more than enough to eat (though it was wicked expensive: $160 for lunch for 5 people!) Seeing as how I don’t eat anything that ever lived in the water, you should be fine, shadow.

Just a note that the Dim Sum at the Phoenix is generally considered very affordable (by Chicago standards).

I promise I won’t have a migraine this time, so if any bar dancing goes on, I am definitely in. I’ll be dressed appropriately.

Whew, I go away for a few days and look what happens!

  1. Monty Python is playing this week at the Century Threater in Evanston about 5 minutes from my house (7 from Viles). It may or may not be still there when the Dope comes into the Station. We’ll play it by ear.

  2. Dim Sum. There are dozens of non fishy, non shrimpy delicacies! One of my absolute favorites is the veggie pot sticker filled with stir fried veg and crunchy stuff…mmmmm. And the BBQ pork buns, the little chicken pie thingies with the golden glazed flaky crusts, the beef noodles, the Shu Mai (pork and water chestnut) etc. I eat there by myself and gorge on about 20 bucks, maybe a couplke more if I get a larger menu item. They come in like three price categories from 1.50 to 4.25 or so IIRC. I may go there for brunch this Sat. morning for a recon mission as the BarRecon was so fruitful

  3. Wrigleyville during a Cubs game.
    Noooooooooooooooooo!!!
I worked security at the park for 4 years. The Reds games were consistently the worst, most crowded, most drunken, most fights, arrests, injuries, lost bratty OH children, lost and belligerent tour bus people etc. etc. etc. Need I continue? I am all for staying as far away from the area as possible!.

My vision of this DopeFest is to show people some Real Chicago, the wonderful, quirky hidden gems that the tourists never get to see. Now Chief O’neills may seem a little kitschy, but the people there will be either Irish Immigrants or actual real life Chicagoans! (not to slur all the lovely foreigners who occupy the entire city along the Lakefront for about a mile or so inland;))

  1. Timing. Here is my thought. Friday starts as soon as possible. I am available to ferry people around in the early afternoon as long as you dont mind my kids in the car- max two ppl at a time. I will be on vacation that whole week. After Idrop the rugrats with mommy, I will be available for mass consumption. However due to limited finances, I dont think iwill be drinking much. Donations are gladly accepted

  2. Gaudere. It is with mixed emotions that I report that Gaudie will most likely not be attending. She is probably going to be moving into her fabulous new swanky condo on Sheridan Road with lakeviews to die etc. She sends her regrets. I may still be able to pry her away from the moving boxes if all goes smoothly. In fact, there is a slight chance Imay help her move at some point in the day. I need to think of a way to incorporate her mnoving into a Dopefest activity.

Hmmm…On saturday, I was a loss for what to do between Dium SUm and the Chiefs. I will rely on the other Dopers for ideas. Perhaps if the boss lets me borrow the van, we could get 5 or 6 guys, and move gaudere in a flash then we would be able to get her to come along and relax.!
I’ll run it by her and see what happens. Any more questions??

um…somewhere I missed where the Phoenix is…

If I’m to be involved in anything Friday or early Saturday, I’m going to need a place to crash Friday night.

A place to crash Saturday would be nice, too, as I don’t particularly like driving back to Springfield post-fest. I’d have to curtail my drinking or something. Not cool.

Okay, you talked me into Dim Sum. If you do a recon this weekend Mike, ask them some dumb questions, like is the pork and chicken and stuff cooked in the same pans as the shrimp? The last time somebody talked me into eating at a Chinese restaurant, I ordered Almond Chicken and broke out in a rash because it turned out the chicken was cooked in the same pan as a shrimp dish and they didn’t wash the pan in between.

BTW, the Phoenix is located at 2131 South Archer, which is about nine miles south of the hotel. It looks like it is just south of downtown, but don’t quote me on that.

Yeah, the address of the Phoenix is 2131 S. Archer Avenue, Chi, IL 60616 (312) 328-0848 (I’ve already printed out my Mapquest directions from the hotel).

Heathen!

It’s okay, *Bunny, time spent in bathtubs doesn’t count…uh, nevermind.

[sub]I just don’t like seafood.[/sub]

I would like to jump and say that I also hate any sort of fish or seafood.

So you’re not alone. In fact, you’re in very hip company

jarbaby

More seafood for me!

If people are really looking for something to do Saturday afternoon, I’m sure there will be a protest over by the Real World House.

Oh, and I’m trying to talk Milossarian into driving down for this one. The punk is intimidated by the length of this thread and doesn’t want to open it.

Doesn’t Milo know that size doesn’t matter?

I’ve finally found my people!! Seafood is the sickest, most disgusting thing EVER. I don’t just hate it – I have a phobia about it.

boli, I’ve actually thrown-up after eating some fish, that was when I was 8. My mom never forced it on me again and I was allowed to leave the house when she made scallops <blech!>

Back to the point, though, Dim Sum is good eatin’.

Pansies. Mmmmm, fish, scallops, seafood of any type. Sushi, sashimi. Mmmmmm. I’m makin’ myself hungry here.
[sub]ts, you are bad. Bad.[/sub]

Magadalene, tell Milo that if he can make it down to Lansing by 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, he can ride down with Shadow and I. Our hotel room is filled, but I’ll offer the transport from Lansing to Chi. He can park his car at my house.

Wanna hear a funny story? I’m gonna tell it anyway. So, I’m talkin’ with my mom last night. My very conservative, Christian mom. We’re heading out to begin the search for The Skirt for OhDope.

I (finally) hesitantly told her that I was getting my bellybutton pierced in Chicago when I go (isn’t it weird the irrational fears we still have of our parent’s disapproval even when we’re older?) I slyly mentioned that it was a compromise between Randy and I - I had wanted a tattoo and he didn’t like the idea.

She said (and here’s the part that’s the shocker), “Oh a little tattoo would’ve been cool. I think little delicate ones are kind of sexy.”

:insert jaw-dropping smiley here, plus me rolling my eyes at myself:

Of course, now this gives me more ammunition for the full-court press to get Randy to let me have one. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, to address Milo’s fear of opening this thread, we’ll soon have to start a new one, having maxed this one out.

Dyno, you’re welcome to stay with me. Email me if ya want or just play it by ear. No one else has requested use of my futon, so I’ll check with you before confirming with anyone else.

Is anyone else up for something THIS weekend? Or is it just Mike and I? We’re almost surely going to hit the Phoenix on Sat. morning.

One more suggestion for the actual dopefest weekend. No one mentioned Sunday morning/afternoon. I know many will be taking off or will be about sick and tired of us all. I personally think I’ll be looking for a good Sunday Brunch Buffet with bottomless bloody mary’s and mimosas. I know the Hyatt in Baltimore had one for less than $20 which, considering the all you can drink alcohol, is really a great deal (the food is amazing too). I hope Chicago has something similar. Maybe I’ll do some scouting for that this weekend. Prolly closer to $30, but maybe a few of us can afford it. Or I’d be willing to downgrade to brunch at the Kitch’n (Roscoe and Damen/a very kitchy place), about $8 plus drinks. That’s a small place, so we’d have a hard time getting seating for more than about 6.

OK, I’ll shut up now. Once I get started, it’s hard to stop. I wonder if you took all my posts and put them end to end, would they be longer than all the posts of these newbies celebrating their 1000th post?

That sounds like a nice plan, Vile, but I have a 5-hour drive waiting for me on Sunday. No alcohol for this girl. Hell, I’ll probably still have plenty in my system from the night before.

Hillary’s Urban Eatery has a great brunch, no liquor, though. It’s in my hood, has a huge upstairs that would probably fit us.
