Well, this goes waaaay back, but does anyone remember
this little movie? I don’t know the title but it was
kind of an Afterschool Special Movie Thingy but before there was an After School Special (early/late 70’s).
It was about a black child who was poor and lived
in a a bad part of the “big city”, with his working mother, no father, and he found this stray cat and took
care of it, making it a house out of an abandoned
stove ,actually taking money out of the grocery
funds to buy tuna for the cat. And then the most heart-breaking conclusion, the cat escapes from
his arms and gets run over.
I think the boy’s name was J.T.
This movie has haunted me to this day and I still
have no idea what the title was.
They don’t make After School Specials like that anymore.
Wow smooches. I think that I am going to be depressed all day. What kind of children’s movie is that?
I am going to have to agree with most of Nacho4Sara’s choices. I must have watched Dirty Dancing 100 times when I was 14. I also loved TimeBandits, A Christmas Story, The Wizard of Oz and The Goonies.
Maybe I was a strange child but I remember watching those old Conan the Barbarian movies a bunch, and one called Red Sonja (I think) that was kind of similar with a girl.
Finally, does anyone remember a movie called Clash Of The Titians? We watched that movie every weeks for years while I was growing up.
smooches - they used to show us that in grade school on those old projectors! I’d forgotten all about it. I have no idea what it’s called though.
Zumba - I loved Clash of the Titans! Of course, from reading my earlier post you may know why - the same man (I forget his name) did the creatures and animation for both Clash of the Titans and Jason and the Argonauts.
I feel like such a cynic…
I recently bought Legend because I loved it as a young teen, and it was the only Tom Cruise movie I’ve even been able to stomach. I hated it when I finally re-watched it. I thought it was a boring and pointless movie this time around. I shoulda just left it, and kept my memories of a magical movie.
The first movie I remember seeing in the theatre was Bambi, when I was four. I was terrified. I thought the theatre was on fire, and I was upset when Bambi’s mom died. Now I watch it, and in the words of Chandler Bing, think “So, they quit drawing the deer…”.
I wasn’t quite a kid when the Neverending Story came out, but I did like it enough to read the book (as an adult, of course), and now prefer the book over the movie. So, the book pretty much ruined the movie for me.
I loved The Fox and the Hound when it first came out, and was really excited to buy it for my kids. I watched it with them, and was so bored I had to leave the room. The kids didn’t like it much either…
I could go on, but suffice it to say, I should have just left some of those movies in my memory. They really weren’t the same after adulthood.
I for the most part throughly enjoy watching most children’s movies. Disney still puts out some of the finest animated films even now, “The Little Mermaid”, “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Lion King” are perfect examples. One of our recent animated favorites is the Spielberg produduced “Prince of Egypt”.
My first child was born in 1984 but I was watching children’s movies long before that, “E.T.” wasn’t such a hit just because it appealed to children.
We own a lot of children’s movies. “The Neverending Story” has been one of our favorites for years. My daughter was afraid of it when I first brought it home but she came to love it. A big favorite of my son was “The Sandlot”, I’d be willing to bet I’ve seen that little film over 100 times.
When I was a kid growing up Disney was the big producer of children’s films. I loved anything with Haley Mills, “The Parent Trap” and “Polyanna” were two of my favorites. “Old Yeller” and “Big Red” still make me cry. Later on I came to like a couple of little movies done by some independent film studio who’s name I can’t remember. They were tear jerker types like the old Disney films I was used too. Has anyone seen “Where the Red Fern Grows” or “Against a Crooked Sky”? They were nice sappy little kids films with a message. I loved them. I also grew up loving musicals. We all loved “The Sound of Music” but my favorite when I was a kid was “Oliver”. We have the movie at home now and my kids love it too. Oliver Reed as Bill Sykes and Ron Moody as Fagan are how I will forever think of these characters.
Recently my son and I went to see “Remember the Titans”. It wasn’t a bad little movie. It was marketed towards kids but the theme is so far back in the 70s I’m not sure if kids today get the message. We enjoyed it though. With Denzel Washington in the film how can you go wrong? I also loved the soundtrack, old 70s R & B.
Name a kid’s movie that been out within the last 16 years and I’ve probably seen it!
