Childhood Nightlights

Hell no. When I was a kid I was fanatical about wanting absolute pitch black darkness to sleep in. I’d stuff towels under the door to block the little bar of light that would come in from the hallway, and I constantly complained to my parents about the light coming in the windows until they bought me blackout shades and then I’d tape the edges to the window frames because light would come around the edges of the blackout shades.

I once had a nightmare that had something to do with the dimly-seen light fixture in the ceiling and the edges of the walls and whatnot but I don’t know if that started the obsession or if the obsession provoked the nightmare.

A devil’s head.

Got the white LED ones where needed.

As a kid I did not like open closet doors with the totally black opening. I still don’t.

My parents are frugal but like to roam the house at night, so there were always nightlights. A favorite I remember from childhood was a small pagoda light. In their old age, my parents have outfitted their house with red nightlights, so it’s like visiting a submarine.

I don’t recall ever having a nightlight per se while growing up. We did, though, keep the light on over the sink all night. This being a split-level house with the kitchen on the main level, the effect was to provide a dim light throughout the common areas of the house.

As an adult, I’ve usually had an automatic on/off nightlight in the bathroom to assist with middle-of-the-night calls of nature. Currently, I do not for a variety of reasons, one of which is our bathroom window is directly across the street from a street light, so there’s enough ambient light without it.

We didn’t have them in our house growing up. However, my grandparents a couple states away did. I was fascinated with the light sensor. Cover it with a thumb: light turns on. Uncover: light turns off. Captivating!
