Night lights

Do you use them? How many? Where?

I’ve got 4 in the house. We live out in the boonies and it’s really, really dark at night - no street lights to provide a little ambient glow. We do have a lamp post in front of the house that’s controlled by a photo cell. It shines through the bow window and both spare bedrooms, but the master bedroom is in the back.

Anyway, I have a small, dim one in the master bathroom, and a brighter one in the guest bathroom - it illuminates the hall, too. I also have one in the kitchen and one by the door to the garage so I can make my way from the bedroom to my car without having to grope along the walls or turn on lights as I leave in the dark of the morning. They’re also nice for when we come home after dark - there’s a little glow in the house.

We have four - one in each bathroom, one in the kitchen and one in my room. The one in my room is a night light/flashlight combo that I put in after one too many waking hallucinations.

I just purchased this. I haven’t got it yet, so I am yet to find out how useful it’s light is. I bought it for the ‘cool’ value. The blurb implies that it doesn’t last all night, but a good many hours. I assume it works like the glow on analogue watches.

Lobsang, I want one of those, too!!

In the children’s bedrooms, I have compact fluorescent combination bulbs; when you first turn them on, they light up white and consume something like 7 watts (light output equiv ~40w incandescent), when you turn them off and back on again, they light up amber from an integral superbright LED and consume milliwatts.

We have a tiny lamp that runs on a 4 watt bulb that we leave on all the time in our bedroom. I’ll usually leave a lamp, or the fake-fire lamp on the top of the bookshelf on in the living room at night.

I am terrified of sleeping in the dark. We’re also in the boonies and when the power goes out, you can’t see your hand in front of your face.

My computer monitor is my night light. No, I don’t mind sleeping in the dark, but it’s almost always on, so it serves the purpose well. I’m such a geek.

I tried leaving my computer on runing some ahem … ‘task’ <cough> once, but it’s fans were too loud and disturbed my sleep.

Not any, but I keep meaning to buy some. Mainly one for the hallway so I can check on my son without having the hall light shine in and disturb him.

Yes and no.

I have a small apartment, and I live alone. I know the place just fine, and could probably move around in total darkness if I had to.

But I’ll never have to. I’ve Taken Steps!

First off, by the front door is an outlet. In this outlet is my rechargable emergency flashlight, which has a little nightlight on it. This makes it easy to find the door and, should there be an emergency, anything else I need.

As far as regular nightlights, no thanks. Don’t need 'em. There’s generally enough ambient light to figure out where I’m at, and if not, to find the lightswitch.

But mostly, I use glow-in-the-dark as my nightlight. A tiny piece of it here or there, mostly on the corners of things, and I’ve got a zero-energy-cost illumination system marking all the important parts of my apartment. Doorhandle here, by the edge of the futon, that’s the edge of the counter over there, check.

And my crowning glory? A glow-in-the-dark toilet seat, with lid. I tried to find a link for y’all, but can’t seem to locate it anymore. Maybe it’s been discontinued. Anyway, I just replaced my normal seat with this and lemme tell ya, there’s nothing like knowing EXACTLY where to aim at 4am without having to turn on the lights. A tiny slice of bathroom heaven! Nice thing is that it glows like mad, even after 8 hours of darkness in a closed bathroom I can still see where I’m going. So to speak.

By the way, that’s a cool lamp thingy Lobsang. Lemme know how ya like it, I might have to get one.

None in my 380-square-foot studio, though I sleep with the TV on and that gives adequate ambient light for getting to the kitchen or bathroom, where the fridge or real light will do the job.
