My guess is that it means that people who were trained as vets and work for the government don’t need to maintain a Kansas license. Maybe as long as they have a license somewhere they can practice veterinary medicine in Kansas as a government employee. Maybe Kansas figures the government employer can do its own vetting and licenses are only needed to protect the public. I’m sure it doesn’t mean that just any body with no training can get a job as a government vet.

I was surprised to find out that the majority of veterinarians are not in private practice; most of them work in some kind of industry. A HS classmate, who was a bit of a goof-off but I knew he was quite intelligent, is a veterinarian with a master’s degree in ruminant digestion, and works for a big dairy farm; my cousin is also a DVM, and in this case is a veterinary pathologist, although IDK if he’s still working because he’s had some serious health problems in recent years. He worked for the state agricultural division, after a few years in private practice.

My BFF’s son has kicked around the idea of being a zoo veterinarian, although I don’t think he’s going to go to veterinary school.

Many state-licensed jobs require a person to have a single state license in good standing to work for the Federal government, and they do not necessarily have to be licensed in the state where they work and live. I did clinicals on an Indian reservation, and that was certainly true there, and more recently, in 2021, had an opportunity to work at a FEMA-run vaccination clinic in Tennessee, where I have never lived or been licensed, but in the end I decided not to do it and the program was being dismantled by the time the specified dates rolled around.

The five-week-old baby chimp was found deceased this morning, cradled in the arms of its mother.

Kucheza’s death was due to head trauma, although it wasn’t believed to be a deliberate case of infanticide.
