Chinese language help: rape?

Okay, here’s the quick rundown:

My wife and I are going through the mountains of red tape required to adopt a child from China. Yesterday, we had our home study done, with a counselor-person who had also adopted a child from China, so she knew the process.

But when we got to the part about my wife’s employment, she got a little concerned. See, my wife is the case manager at the local rape crisis center. And, according to our home study person, a “rape crisis center” is not a concept that translates easily into Chinese and will probably confuse people who hold a goodly portion of our future in their hands.

So, is that true? If so, is there some alternative language I can use that will be less confusing to the Chinese officials? Say, “Women’s Crisis Center” or something?

IANALinguist, and I don’t speak Chinese, but given that the grammatical structure of Chinese is different from English, you can probably picture the words getting shifted around and put in different parts of the sentence and then you can picture some Chinese speakers getting very, very worried. I would go with “women’s crisis center” or something. The concept still may not translate well, but at least you’ll get a :confused: instead of an :eek: .

Try calling a rape crisis center in a place with a large Chinese population, like San Francisco. They can probably give you a translation - they might even have literature in Chinese that they could mail to you.

Who is doing the translation of your home study to send to China? A translator with experience should catch this sort of stuff and make it right.

We’re using CCAI. My understanding is that the translation of the home study is done by CCAI, and the persons who work there are native Chinese, so hopefully the translation will come out okay.

Three?! Holy cow, I can’t imagine doing all this document-gathering three times…I already feel like my life’s being peeled open for the world to see.
