Choosing the right gym

All right, I want to start going to a gym again. I’m almost completely recovered from the surgery and the complications. I don’t want to go back to the gym I was using because 1) the pool and whirlpool were not as clean as I liked and 2) there were a LOT of kids running around (which probably contributed to number 1).

So, how should I choose a gym? Right now, I’m looking at a few, and basically, I’m just using cleanliness of the pool, cost (both initiation and monthly fees), and location as my criteria. Is there anything else I should be considering? Anyone got any warning signs to share?

I need a pool for water exercise (I’ve finally conquered my fear of getting into large bodies of water), a hot tub/whirlpool, and probably some strength training. My doc has approved of this plan.

I am not sure of how much you can do since your surgery, but I suggest that you look at class schedules and see if there is some that is right for you. I know that most clubs with pools have low impact water aerobic classes (my 86 year old grandma is even in a class  ) If so, check to see if the times fit into your schedule.

The club I belong to has aerobic, step aerobic, powerflex, kickboxing, spinning, and yoga classes. The aerobic classes has varying levels of intensity, from low impact beginner to high impact. I would really like to take the yoga and spinning classes, but they don’t work out with my schedule. If it wasn’t for the lunch hour step aerobics and kickboxing and after work powerflex classes, my membership would be all but worthless. I don’t have enough will power to create and keep my own regiment.

I have always found that I have a lot more determination when there is a scheduled class, I am expected to be there, and I have the instructor pushing me. If I didn’t have those things I would give up after one or two reps and only if I suceeded in conned myself into going in the first place. You may be a lot more disciplined than I am.

Good luck to you.

Lynn so glad you are doing ok. Wish I could help with the gym part but I am allergic to them.

I suppose you need to work off some of that chocolate I sent you too.

What I have found is the most important part is convenience. No matter how much you like a gym, if it is a pain to get there, you won’t go as much as you should. Hope this helps. Good luck on the recovery.
