Chris Licht out at CNN

Apparently ratings and revenue drops did him in. Plus, giving an hour for Trump to spew.

CNN staffer writes piece about how happy they are with the news.

Shoulda been really frank and used the heading « Ding-dong! The Witch is Dead! » as all the little CNN Munchkins staffers dance in joy.

Well, this is refreshing:

In recent months, David Zaslav, chief executive of CNN parent Warner Bros. Discovery, also started to have serious concerns. That was evidenced by Zaslav’s move last week to install his top lieutenant, David Leavy, as chief operating officer of CNN.

(snip)

Zaslav, who took responsibility for the chaos that has gripped CNN in recent months, said that Licht’s job was “never going to be easy.” He praised his “amazing career” and wished him well on his future endeavors. “For a number of reasons, things didn’t work out and that’s unfortunate,” Zaslav said. “It’s really unfortunate. And ultimately that’s on me. And I take full responsibility for that.”

(Bolding mine)

Licht’s out!
Bedtime.
{HEE-HEE-HEE}

Zaslav at the top is still a towering dumbshit, so expect someone else to be installed to pursue a similar agenda of profit being prioritized above whatever small vestiges of journalism might still be discernible in a television news channel.

When they announced that Colbert’s former guy was going to head CNN, I knew that this wasn’t going to go well at all. He stumbled out of the gate and just kept bull-headedly making things worse.

A completely and obviously from the start horrible choice.

We had layoffs at my company recently. In the town hall afterward, our CEO kept saying he “took full responsibility,” for the business decisions that led to us being overstaffed, and having to cut head count. Except, he still has his job, and the people he laid off… don’t. How can you take responsibility for something if you’re not taking the consequences?

This is just fake humility. It’s a pose to make himself seem more sympathetic. It’s not actually admirable or refreshing at all, just more corporate bullshit.

I think it was the Atlantic article that did him in. He didn’t have to agree to it.

Agreed. Reminds me of when Admiral Richardson, then Chief of Naval Operations, got up in front of Congress and did the usual flag officer two step. He took full responsibility for the deaths of 17 sailors due to gross incompetence on the part of their officers (aided by a lack of training and loose standards, compounded by poorly considered and less well supported changes to critical ship’s control equipment in one instance) and yet I don’t recall him trying to court-martial himself.

No, but chances are it would have been written anyways, just without his input.

I still prefer it to “WITCH HUNT! UNFAIR! NOT MY FAULT, IT’S A CONSPIRACY!!”

Most of what goes on in business is corporate bullshit.

Licht may be gone, but CNN is still REALLY acting like they want Trump to be president again.

It isn’t about reporting the news, that journalistic idea went out the window when the 24 hours news race began decades ago. It’s all about profits and in the television business, that is most determined by ratings and viewership. Conservative news programs have higher ratings.

Anybody remember the Talk Back skit with Buck Henry? I couldn’t find a video of it. Here’s the transcript:

He plays radio talk show host Frank Noland. When his initial topic of federally supported municipal bonds fails to bring in the callers, he adds more and more crazy topics to try to get the phones to ring. Eventually he’s so desperate for callers he’s saying:

Just like news organizations today. Saying whatever it takes to get ratings.
