"Christianophobia" - is there a double standard in the way Christianity is treated?

Saying you’re more likely to be murdered by a Christian than a Muslim does not mean that nobody has ever been murdered by a Muslim.

Sure, but I have no idea what that has to do with anything? I’m just applying your logic. Charlie Hebdo should be totally fine to draw Muhammad all day long, but they should quiver in their boots about drawing Jesus. Right?

He was more concerned at retaliation from Muslims for criticizing Islam than he was at the prospect of being attacked by Christians for criticizing Christianity.

BTW, there’s been a story in the past few days about a Christian group who claims they were kicked out of the Burning Man festival “for being Christians.” No, they weren’t; they were kicked out for violating various Burning Man rules about leaving people alone when they say they aren’t interested and don’t want to be bothered.

Plenty of people have been tortured by the Spanish Inquisition. Just because they are not active right now does not mean that that type of thinking has been completely purged from Christianity.

Oh, I’m well aware. That’s the reason my family left Spain.

You wouldn’t catch me dead arguing that it is.

It’s certainly more prevalent right now in Islam than in Christianity, though. That has a lot less to do with the tenants of the religions themselves than with socioeconomic circumstances surrounding Christian and Muslim populations.

You’re obviously not applying my logic when you’re saying the exact opposite of what I said.

Or Penn Jillette, a professional comedian, was making a joke about how some people have an irrational fear of Muslims.

France is pretty secular-about half are are no (organized) religion, with Catholic 25% and Islam 10%.

Over 500 years ago. Despite Monty Python, literally no one expects them any more.

I can list a bunch of bad stuff for most major religions if we are going back 500 years.

Is it against Christian beliefs to draw Jesus?

All religions are equally worthy of ridicule. Christianity has a particularly strong impact on my life (via the Conservative Christian movement) so I’m going to be more vocally anti-Christian.

But there’s also the company you keep, and I don’t want to keep company with Islamophobes. They’re not ridiculing Islam for good reasons. I definitely don’t want to keep company with anti-Semites, for the same reason.

If I found out that someone making fun of Christians wasn’t doing it because they thought all religions were dumb, but because Allah commanded it, I wouldn’t want to be involved in that either.

Zen Buddhism? Native American religions?

A quick Google shows that smarter people than I have debated whether or not Buddhism is a “religion.” If it is, I’ll exempt it for not requiring a belief in the supernatural.

A certain percentage of people are evil or insane and want to kill other people. In a country with a lot of Christians, most of those evil/insane people will be Christians and will have made up in their mind some justification based on what they think of as Christianity for their crimes. In a country with a significant proportion of Muslims, a similar proportion of evil/insane people who commit crimes will be Muslim and will have made up in their minds a justification based on what they imagine is Islam for their crimes. Substitute any other religion for Christian or Muslim.

So in the United States, where there are a lot of Christians and very few Muslims, more killers will have made up a justification for killing in the name of defending the Bible than there will be Muslims who have made up a justification for killing in the name of Islam.

In the USA, the killers who lynched hundreds in the South (and the onlookers who cover up those crimes), who bombed the Olympics in Atlanta and committed many other similar crimes thought of themselves as Christian. In France (a country with a lot more Muslims than there are in the US), the criminals who murdered the staff at Charlie Hebdo thought of themselves as Muslim. All their victims are dead, regardless of the religion of their killers, and regardless of the religion of their killers, almost all Christians and almost all Muslims are not killers.

I hold the belief that men can never truly understand the atmosphere in which women grow up and have to live in, that whites can never truly understand the atmosphere in which blacks grow up and have to live in, that straights can never truly understand the atmosphere in which gays grow up and have to live in, and the Christians can never truly understand the atmosphere in which non-Christians grow up and have to live in.

The atmosphere is omnipresent, pervasive, insidious, and sometimes overwhelming. Although standards and attitudes have changed greatly over my lifetime, it remains a simple fact that straight white Christian men are the default and every other combination is subject to both explicit and implicit diminution.

Every culture appears to rest upon a layer of jokes and japes about the oppressors, a method of coping with the reality that rising above one’s status is inherently difficult to impossible and that the exceptions are held to standards that do not apply to the oppressors. The current anti-DEI purge of the administration is explicit that given what the default sees as fair treatment, blacks especially, and often women, in the case of Hegseth’s military, would never have earned their positions, being congenitally disqualified. That Hegseth follows a mentor who calls for a protestant Christian theocracy should make any attempt at denial of what the default is otiose.

ummm, ok… Now redo those odds after you have done a tv special critical of Islam.

You are being intentionally obtuse or are completely ignorant of of the fact that “Christians” make up 60% of the population of the US while Muslims make up 1-2%. So yeah buddy, your chances are higher, but are they 60x higher?

yep just a little joke, with absolutely no truth to it at all…and yet, he has yet to do a show critical of Islam. weird right?!

Umm, yes?

oh man, I’d love to see your evidence for that. And again, that still disregards what your odds would be after doing a tv show critical of Islam. Charlie Hebdo attack would never happen in the US right?

Yes, I’m aware that the population of Christians in the United States is much larger than the population of Muslims. That’s why you’re more likely to be killed by a Christian than a Muslim in the United States.

So if you’re going to be killed by somebody for offending their religion, you’re much more likely to be killed by a Christian than a Muslim.

This is all very basic math.

So if somebody in America is okay with taking the “risk” of offending Christians but is afraid to take the “risk” of offending Muslims, this is not based on a realistic appraisal of the numbers. It’s based on having an irrational fear of Muslims.

The likely explanation is that Penn and Teller realized an episode about the Quran wouldn’t have as much viewer interest as an episode about the Bible. And then Penn Jillette made a joke that the reason they didn’t do an episode about the Quran because they were afraid of Muslims. And some people who genuinely are afraid of Muslims took the joke seriously.

no, it’s not “basic math” at all. For all murders committed in the US (for whatever reason), the chances that the murderer is a “Christian” is presumably higher than the murderer being a Muslim. But (again, assuming) very few people get killed in the US for offending someone’s religion. And we don’t know the percentage of such murders that are committed by Muslims vs Christians. Maybe the subset of murders committed in the US for this specific reason is dominated by Muslims. If you have some data, I would love to see it. But you are assuming facts not in evidence here.
