That fact is the very basis of @Little_Nemo 's reasoning. Are you aware of that fact?
I’ll engage on your hypothetical if you tell me if your confidence that Muslims commit disproportionately more crime was based on facts or something else.
It should go without saying but the KKK is an explicitly Christian organization and every lynching or bombing they carried out (obviously many of which against other Christians but intra religious bigotry is as old as time) was an act of Christian terrorism.
Christianity has indeed gone through iconoclastic periods, and there are still some iconoclastic sects around today.
And there is no universal prohibition against drawing Muhammad in Islam, either - only specific sects ban the practice, and there is plenty of historical art of Muhammad drawn by Muslims.
I wouldn’t recommend showing those pictures in your History of Art class, though.
My data is that there are sixty times as many Christians as there are Muslims in the United States. So I assume that Christians commit sixty times as many crimes as Muslims. And I assume Christians and Muslims are equally likely as individuals to commit a given crime, like murder, for a given motive, like their religious beliefs.
If you disagree with my assumption and you believe that Muslims “dominate” this type of crime because a Muslim is sixty times more likely to commit a religious-motivated murder than a Christian is, I feel the burden of proving this extraordinary claim falls on you.
Otiose - a word I never knew existed until quite recently, and now it seems I see it all the time. It has nothing to do with ears.
So, do you think Native American faiths are “worthy of ridicule”?
Except- Christians are not known for that. Mind you- they kill people for various and sundry reasons sure- hate, money, jealousy, revenge, and of course, being in a violent relationship. I can not find any US murders where the motive was “he offended my Christian beliefs.” However, in the US, being killed for “he offended my religious beliefs” whether Christian or Islam is not much of a concern.
Almost every Christian Church says otherwise, and the KKK has not killed anyone since 1981. And that was for racist reasons, not religious ones. It is true, back in the dim past the KKK hated Catholics too, but the last time they murdered one was in 1921 when a Priest married a white woman to a Puerto Rican. Racism, not religion.
Fact 1- about right. Assumption 2- unknown.
…You know better. Like…you know. I’m trying to not get a warning here, but you know.
So if the Sunnis say the Shiites don’t rep Islam then they’re out of the club?
Sounds like some No True Scotsman fallacy to me.
This isn’t exactly meant to bag on Christianity specifically. More the delusion that Christianity is any way less a thing people self radicalize into murderers about than any other religion.
Where did you get that from, in my post? Being as I did not mention either Sunnis or Shiites.
And Soviet Russia was an explicitly atheist nation, but Stalin alone killed 20 Million people.
And Communist China was an explicitly atheist nation but they killed 80 million of their own people.
We can do this all day. The KKK killed people for racist reasons, not because they “offended their (non-existent) religious beliefs”. What next, the Crusades? Only a 1000 years ago, why not? ![]()
Maybe I have not expressed myself effectively.
I think that there is a way that people look at things like Islamic terrorism and treat it differently than Christian Nationalist terorism. Where organizations, like the KKK hold their Christianity as a fundamental plank of their identity.
Now they are certainly not representative of the average Christian, just like the Charlie Hebdo killer isn’t representative of the overwhelming majority of islam.
And I agree with you Athiests kill, Buddhism kills, Hindus kill, Muslim governments kill, Ultra Orthodox Jews are a significant piece of Netanyahu’s fragile coalition as he commits genocide.
The biggest thing about what makes Christianity different here, is it’s the religion you default to if you want easy access to power. An overwhelming number of Christians would be something else tomorrow if it wasn’t the safe default.
The entire LGBTQ+ community might want a word. Seriously, dude.
Yes, I’m sure you can handwave away examples all day. Remember that the racism and religion here (and pretty much everywhere) are heavily intertwined.
You will presumably have heard the stories of Southerners in the Civil War era attending churches in the North and being shocked to learn that the sermons didn’t include justifications for slavery. The racism is built into their religious beliefs.
And if you’re tempted to say “that doesn’t count” I’ll note that the Qu’ran doesn’t decree violence against non-believers any more (and probably no less) than the Bible does.
Sure. Why wouldn’t they be? You want to mount a defense for human sacrifice? We can start with those and work our way down.
Judging religions by their merits is a fool’s errand - all religions are equally ridiculous, and I say that a a religious person. People will do what they were going to do anyway and use their religion to justify themselves. The only real metric for religions is the actions of their followers.
My view on this is that there has been a bit of a push and pull effect whereby Christianity has been hijacked by a political front that is right wing in western nations like the US which causes more scrutiny on the left wing in these places over this brand of “Political Christianity”. For example the whole idea of abortion is warped by one side of the debate wrapping their argument in the Bible. However Christian principles in how politicians approach their idea of governing need not be right wing because America had a Sunday School preacher as president in the 1970s when Roe v Wade was already decided and it went against his religious background but which he did not seek to fight over.
This attitude that Christianity as a political front is right wing I believe causes a blind spot on the left that you can’t wear that faith as a liberal but other faiths as a basis of your politics is virtuous. There is an idea of “punching up” (little guy hitting back, necessary) vs “punching down” (attacking soft targets by the powerful) on some of the left and I think Christianity is seen as the dominant religion therefore punching up is necessary.
“Political Islam” is a fundamentalist political front too yet in some context it is seen as useful for fighting against a western hegemony by people on the far reaches of the left whose political ideology is the West is Bad and nothing else. These people view it as a foreign policy goal and not a religious doctrine. Hindutva is a political front in India pursued by the right wing of Modi and I think that is too seen as the powerful punching down because Hinduism is the dominant majority in India and this political ideology targets the minority…yet their own adherents will argue to look at how Muslims in India are treated compared to Hindus in Pakistan.
Basically in a long way I think it’s less double standards in the sense of people who have one rule for themselves and another rule for others and more blind spots when they see religion as a tool for a political idea as opposed to a moral guardrail for the way they live their own lives.
I am baffled by this insistence that doing a show critical of Islam results in a significant chance of reprisal murder. in order to believe this, it seems you have to believe:
-
No TV shows critical of Islam have ever aired (say, on Fox News); or
-
There has been a documented history of reprisal violence against folks associated with those shows (on, say, Fox News); or
-
There’s no such history, but only because the number of such shows is too small for there to be a reasonable sample size.
Obviously, all three beliefs would be false.
Hebdo wasn’t murdered for criticizing Islam. He was murdered for committing deliberately blasphemy against Islam. Which is still monstrous–but equating criticism and provocation is intellectually sloppy.
Little will change until the education system is changed and the education system is set up by those who would lose their control over society if children were taught facts and taught to think for themselves rather than being taught myths and propaganda such as is what’s happening over large regions. It’s the same ‘keep them ignorant’ that’s worked for those in power for centuries.
Children are being taught pseudoscience from the day they’re born. This is reinforced when they enter the education system. There are generations of whom this is what they were instilled with. Or brainwashed with, describe it as you wish, but they are taught things that have never existed in the first place. As with every other cult an element of fact or history has been distorted and expounded upon. People could be forgiven for believing such in the past. Back then the opportunity to educate oneself wasn’t at our fingertips as it is today.
Those among us that are driven by greed & power find easy prey among those with unschooled, simplistic, easy to manipulate values. It’s no mistake that these corrupt power mongers target church leaders & their flocks and have largely taken over the education system in many regions. Next time you vote for your local school trustee, pay close attention to that persons’ resume. It’s where the grooming begins, both for children and potential rising stars of the political game.
Quote from a Michigan resident - what we’re up against. I blocked her name but obviously she had no qualms about putting it out there:
*MAGA supporter Tina B____y says she trusts the president’s handling of the economy. “I think he’s a smart man. And I think that he cares 100 per cent about America,” she said. “The way I look at it is God didn’t use perfect people to do his work. He used people like Trump to do his work.”
Lastly, an observation. I can’t ever recall a non Christian banging on my door or otherwise attempting to draw me into their belief. Of course JoHo’s are well known for such but I’ve had not close acquaintances requesting I come along with them to their services as well. It no different than being approached by Hari Krishna’s, Scientologists or any number of other cults.
I don’t seem to remember the folks behind https://www.thereligionofpeace.com/ getting murdered, and they’ve consistently been one of the biggest spreaders of nasty anti-Islamic propaganda for years now.
Maybe they just haven’t gotten around to it yet?
…do you think that his Bible show was “critical” but not “blasphemous”?
It seems perfectly clear that he knew that making a show that makes fun of the Quran would indeed be viewed as blasphemous.
There are no tenets of atheism that justify killing anyone (or that justify anything, atheism has no tenets period), that must come from somewhere else. This is a poor argument to make.
