Christmas gift for the mailman

I don’t see any recent threads on this, so I was curious what the trend is these days.

Do you leave a little Christmas cash for the mailman or maillady?

I don’t have a problem with it or anything but I don’t really get why one would, they have a nice federal job after all.

I have heard of people leaving gifties for the mailman and even worse, for the garbage man. Ridiculous.

Sorry, I voted based on the title and before I saw the whole OP. Not cash, but a small gift pretty much every year. Usually something edible.

I’ve never given a gift to a mail carrier. But yesterday I left a card for her the first time. Wouldn’t have, but Mrs. L.A. asked if we were leaving something for the Mail Lady.

Yeah, the garbage man gets to keep all the stuff I throw away. What more could he expect?

I have never done it, but it’s a nice gesture for someone who comes to your house 6 days a week to bring you stuff.

But they’re federal employees. They’re not allowed to accept cash gifts of any amount. They are not allowed to accept any gift worth more than $20.

Always. For the trashmen also.

They’re only allowed to accept up to $20, according to Steve, my mail guy. I have an online business and he’s helped me out quite a bit. I usually give him a $20 gift card plus some decadent chocolate or something.

I think I might, if I ever saw or spoke to my carrier. He leaves my mail in the group of boxes a couple houses down. On the occasion I have a package, he leaves it on the porch, rings the doorbell and is generally nearly back to his truck before I even get to the door. I’m not complaining about the service, but it’s just not a personal enough type of service for me to give him presents.

Nope. Maybe if he consistently delivered the correct mail to the correct houses, but he’s only about 50% accurate by my accounting. I don’t reward people just for doing their job, let alone doing it horrendously badly.

I live in a high rise apartment building, I’m not sure I even see the mailperson more than once or twice per year. Plus, these days, the bulk of mail is just junk mail that goes right into the garbage. I might have given something if I lived in a house 20-30 years ago, and saw the mail carrier every day.

I have tipped out extra for Christmas to my hair stylist and a couple of the bartenders I see often.

I leave a handmade treat box with candy or a $10 Starbucks gift card. I think being nice to people (even people doing their jobs) inspires them to give better customer service. I am not above “greasing” my mail carrier (who seems to be dyslexic, and can probably use the encouragement.)

I mail my newspaper carrier $50.

I have no idea how to leave a tip for the garbage guys. An envelope on top of the trash container? No way that could go wrong, amirite?

We usually give them a Starbucks gift card, like 15 bucks or so. but mine will put it in front of our door even though they could just leave it in the lobby and other small things to make our lives easier.

I got my mail carrier a $20 Target gift card. I know when I looked it up a few years ago $20 was the most you could tip them, I don’t know if that has changed. My current mail carrier is terrific, much better than the one who came before him.

I don’t tip the garbage collectors, but on occasion if I see them on a hot summer day in the alley I’ll haul out some cold drinks for them.

For the first year in my life our mailperson left us a holiday card. Clearly a nudge in the direction of a tip. When I thought about it, this is also the first mailperson I’ve ever had an opinion about and it isn’t favorable. She somehow manages to delivery the mail poorly.

Sometimes but more if I’m home and catch the regular person than if they pissed me off or not.

We make homemade fudge every year. The mailman gets a box. We get a nice Thank You card back.

The weekend mailman also gets a box. So do the trash collectors. And the pharmacy. And the bank.
