Christmas in New Orleans

My BIL has gotten a job and moved out. He wants all of us to come down to his place for Christmas. So, apparently we’re spending Christmas in the Big Easy. So it’s up to me, the deal finder and non-professional trip planner, to locate a hotel for all of us. I also have to find things to do during Christmas for at least my family.

This whole trip includes the four of us (hubby, myself, 12 year old son and 11 year old daughter), my MIL, and SIL and her family (hubby, 5 year old daughter and newborn son). I do know the WWII museum is on the agenda, as we both love history and MIL loves WWII history. We’re also headed to Cafe Du Monde at least once, more if I have my say.

We haven’t been to NOLA since before Katrina, so anyone that can give advice as to things to do, I’d appreciate it. We love Christmas lights, so any good locations for that are welcome. Please, no adults only things, as this is a family trip and our children will be with us all the time.

I will send your request to my sister who lives in NO. She has a kid close to your kids’ ages so she should have some good suggestions.

We usually go down for T’giving, but one Xmas we went and saw the Christmas in the Oaks which is a display of lights. You drive through a park which is decorated.

Thank you, NinetyWt. That drive sounds gorgeous, and right up our alley!

The last couple of times I went to New Orleans I stayed at Degas House. It’s about a mile from the Quarter, up Esplanade. Off-season prices are reasonable. I don’t know if Christmas is ‘off-season’.

Johnny, we’ll be staying in Metairie. I have the perfect hotel already scoped out. We have to be close to where BIL lives. But I will keep that in mind for when it’s just the four of us going!

We did Christmas in NOLA a couple of years ago with the kids. There is plenty to do for all ages. There’s been a lot of info posted on this forum, so you might want to do a search. Feel free to PM me if you want.

Off the top of my head for kids:
>Zoo
>WWII Museum (be sure and see the movie-a bit intense)
>Aquarium
>Ferry ride (free at the end of Canal)
>Cafe Dumonde
>Trolley ride uptown (grab dinner while you’re there - we do Jacque-Imo’s, Frankie & Johnnies or Camille Grill)
>Shopping (French Market, Magazine St - all over)
>Insectarium (be sure and find the cafeteria where you can eat bugs)
>Visit a cemetery
>Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club during 3 for 1 happy hour…or not

Personally, I find the carriage rides and boat rides not to be worth the money, but that’s just me. There is so much to do in that town, you will not be bored.

Have fun!

That would be St. Charles Avenue; drive or catch a streetcar at Bourbon & Canal one night on the way back to your hotel. For something closer to Metairie, explore around Suave Road in River Ridge.

I notice you didn’t mention the name of the hotel. I’m hoping it’s not the Holiday Inn on Causeway, or anything on Airline Hwy.

Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World should be fun for kids.

Music venues that allow minors include Palm Court Jazz Cafe, Fritzel’s, Chickie Wah Wah and Preservation Hall. It’s also possible that places like Snug Harbor, The Spotted Cat and Irvin Mayfield’s Playhouse allow kids - you can always ask.

Louisiana Music Factory - a record store in the French Quarter - sometimes has free in-store music performances. It’s also the best place to shop for local music - they have a great inventory, and the people there are helpful and friendly.

Sister’s recommendations:

They must not be good! No, we’re looking at the Marriott Residence Inn off of I-10 and Causeway. BIL mentioned the Marriott on the corner of Esplanade and Causeway: but since MIL will be staying with us, it will be less expensive for us to get a 2 bedroom at the Residence Inn. I’ve heard bad things about Airline Hwy.

Thanks, everybody, for the recommendations: and NinetyWt, please thank your sister for me. lost4life, I did do a search on this forum for NOLA tips: but on page 5 or 6 or so I got stuck in probably the grossest thread ever, so I quit.

For Xmas lights you should go to city park xmas in the oaks. It is really quite beauitful, we go every year. I think they still have a train ride through the park set up. The kids will love it.

If you go to the D-Day museum, across the steer is the The Solomon Victory Theater, where they show “Beyond all Boundaries” 4-D experience. I highly recommend it. It truly immerses you in the action. Check out the Audubon Zoo also, there are some really cool exhibits there.

For hotels, have you tried the sheraton on canal street? I recall it being pretty cheap in price but not in service. I must say, staying downtown will be loads better than staying in the outlying areas.

One last thing, while you are here go eat at Copelands. There you can sample some cajun type food while not straying to far from normality. I happen to LOVE their “Al’s favorite filet”
OOOH mouth watering just thinking of it. Well I hope you have a good time while you are here
and try not to stray to far off the beaten path, as with any city we too have our bad areas.

I forgot to add that there is a Discount when buying Zoo,Aquarium and Imax tickets. There is also a boatride that takes you to the zoo, which is a nice enjoying ride down the mighty mississip on the John J Audubon. Also, in the middle of the city there is Harrah’s Casino. Inside they have some pretty good dining. The Besh steakhouse is top notch and the buffet is pretty decent to as I recall. Last thing to do while you are here is HAVE FUN! Being a fun place is our city’s best asset.

Looking up Copelands: what street is it on? I’m getting Copelands, and then Copelands Cheesecake. You can’t go wrong with cheesecake.

And we’re staying in Metairie because we’ll be close to where my BIL lives. If it were just the four of us, we’d consider something downtown: but my MIL wants to be close to him.

 There are actually a few Copelands locations. The cheesecake bistro is owned by copelands and it too is an excellent restaurant (Fried crawfish raviolli YUMMMMM)

On Veterans Blvd (metarie) there are two locations, I believe. Cheesecake
Bistro is also located on Veterans (Vets as the locals call it).

In Metarie the main road is Vets so most of the big restaurants will be there.

The motels on Airline are the type of place you don’t bring your MIL, and you probably would rent by the hour, but I wouldn’t know the details of such things.

From what I can tell, the Residence Inn is at The Galleria, and I’ve seen it from the outside, and it looks nice. The Marriott is at Lakeway, which is a big set of office buildings on Causeway right on the lake. I know it’s a very nice hotel, but I’d imagine it’s very expensive, especially if you’re needing a suite or two rooms.

Causeway & I-10 is right in the middle of everything. It’s about an equal distance from the airport and downtown New Orleans and about an equal distance between the river and the lake. There’s a large mall with free parking right across the interstate, every type of restaurant you could possibly want, etc.

Probably not the kids, either! Sounds like we’ve picked a good spot to stay: thanks for the confirmation. Yes, the 2 bedroom at the Residence Inn is cheaper than two rooms at the Marriott: and the Residence Inn has free parking and a kitchen. We plan to get there on the 23rd, which will give us a little time on the 24th for last-minute shopping.

If you’d like a little taste of the culture, check out the bonfires on the levies along the Mississippi River. The local custom involves families building huge bonfires along the river on Christmas Eve, to light the way for Papa Noel so he can find all the good little Cajun children in the dark foggy swamps.

It’s a block party atmosphere all along the River Road, and you’ll likely find music, food, possibly some dancing in the streets, all in a family atmosphere. It’s a unique experience, highly recommended.

We had a great time with our toddler at the Louisiana Children’s Museum. It’s a hands-on fun place. It won’t charm the tweens, but it’ll keep the 0-7 year olds happy. There’s a big Mister Roger’s Neighborhood section which will charm the parents.

Last October, the wife and I stayed at the Place D’Arms, a smallish hotel in the Quarter, and were very pleased. (We were tired of the big chains, and so I typed “small hotel new orleans” into Google.)
