WOW, what a bunch of miserables we have turned into that we gripe about such a beautiful holiday invading our lives in what we perceive to be an excessive way.
Is this an adult thing? I remember as a child, teenager, young adult looking forward the Christmas. I admit in my middle ages I now look at it as a bit of a burden dealing with the stress of making sure I buy appropriate gifts, juggling in-law and my own family demands, plus a lifetime of horrific family experiences as a child and teenager during this holiday (some of which will make your skin crawl). I also hate the same Christmas songs being played over and over and over again.
That said, those are MY problems, and not Christmas’ fault.
I don’t RESENT Christmas itself, and I don’t get the hate for it being celebrated so early.
I almost wonder if we now have a cynicism where we are like “Why are we nice to each other only during Christmas?” but if you look at human nature, we really aren’t. To me the holiday is but a yearly reminder of how we SHOULD be to one another, all year long, and that is the Spirit of Christmas, and its up to us whether we carry that forward the rest of the year or not.
Because some people think it’s cynical exploitation of a holiday (that I myself enjoy) in the name of increased revenues and consumerism. Most of the complaints happen because of media and retail.
On the personal level, I absolutely agree with you.
They’re not skipping it. You just didn’t notice their focus on Thanksgiving because it’s devoted to food, which is what the store sells all the time. But if the management is any good, they’ve been getting food for Thanksgiving since at least early October, and sales of things like sugar and canned pumpkin have been up for quite a while.
Black Friday is the day AFTER Thanksgiving. No more fucking Pre-Black Friday shit!
Yesterday I went to BJ’s for you know, food. The lot was filled with all the mad* shoppers purchasing huge screen TVs, dolls, decorations and other CRAP that is destined to be in the land fill soon.
There should be a LAW no Winter Holiday decorations until the FRIDAY after Thanksgiving!
I love Winter Holiday decorations. I like to drive around at night and look at all the pretty lights. Just please not before the day after Thanksgiving.
*insane not angry:D
I’ve given in. I have the Christmas station on downstairs after complaining “why the fuck did a local station go to all-Christmas music a full six weeks before Christmas?” I’ve also baked a batch of snickerdoodles, which I usually wait until at least December to do. I’ve been brain-washed.
Stores have to start promoting Christmas items early because they don’t want to be stuck with them when the season is over. It’s also their key selling season through the sale of gift items.
I went to the Dollar store last week to buy a posterboard to put up on the wall for our family to write down things that we are thankful for. I was also hoping to buy some fall or thanksgiving items that my 9-year-old could use to decorate the posterboard (because she loves doing stuff like that). Not a single fall or thanksgiving item to be found in the store. But there were 3 aisles of Christmas stuff.
