The two strings you currently have will be enough to run four straight vertical lines of lights down the tree - doesn’t sound like enough to me, but it depends what else you’re going to put on there and how many lights you like to see on there. There isn’t a factual answer to your question.
You put your lights on VERTICALLY? Up and Down? I’ve only ever seen people put them up AROUND the tree, so you have horizontal rows of lights. Very weird!
Either way, though, you have to determine what density of lights you want to use. We like a LOT of lights on our Christmas tree, and it’s usually a 7 footer or so (I don’t know what a standard ceiliing height is, but we invariably have to cut off part of the top to get it to stand up and have room for the star or angel!) We use at least six strands (50 lights), and go out and buy more if we have a very big tree. We haven’t put the tree up this year, since we tend to wait until a bit closer to Christmas before going to cut one down.
Have fun! Putting on the lights is the hard part. My favourite is putting on the actual ornaments!
I too believe in going “around” the tree with the lights. My mother tried the “vertical” method one year (she bought some mini-lights that had a ring/halo thing with 6-8 short strings of lights hanging from it. So you could put he halo around the top of the tree and have 6-8 verticle rows of lights).
The easy answer of course is to get a pre-lit tree. That’s what I did when I got sick of fighting with untangling the lights every year. Plus, I agree with mnemosyne, the lights are the yucky part.
Of course, this easy and reasonable solution excludes those who prefer the live trees, but I highly highly recommend them for anyone who doesn’t mind artificial and is tired of the whole tree-light mess. Pop together and plug it in. Ta Da!
