Christmas Wrapping Paper Selection This Year Sucks!

My wife and I have discussed the matter at length and are in complete agreement – the selection of Christmas gift wrapping paper this year sucks. My tastes turn to rich watercolors of traditional Christmas scenes … very Old World, Santas, rural cabins in snowy woodlands, sleighs in snowy villages, etc., and to nice four color representations of Christmas wreaths, dark greens, bright red candles, etc. My wife likes metallic foil stuff with nice Christmassy abstract designs, tres tasteful.

Well, there’s nothing like that around this year at any of the retailers we have looked at … traditional big box outfits that generally carry a large selection of wrapping paper: Target, Walmart, Michael’s, drug store chains, the usual suspects. It’s all crappy weak-ass kiddy art, crude and to our eyes unatrractive stuff with weak, washed out colors. When did this happen? Who makes these decisions about what kind of Christmas wrap to put out? And can they, in the true spirit of Christmas, be killed, or at least, beaten severely?

Merry Christmas to all!

(No, this does not belong in the Pit, I am more puzzled and confused than angry. Unless it turns out Karl Rove is somehow responsible!

No idea, I still have stuff for wrapping left from a few years ago.

What I seriously am looking for is wrapping paper with the word ‘gift’ written all over it =(

They also don’t sell gift tags with scenes of 3 Wise men, shepherds or nativities anymore. I couldn’t find any that even said Merry Christmas. They all said Happy Holiday or nothing. I looked when there was a large selection at stores. All those assortments and not one available that had the above. I can’t imagine how hard a Peace On Earth one would be to find anymore.

Wrapping paper is such a rip-off.

One doper’s famine is another doper’s feast. This year was a GREAT year for blue-with-penguins wrapping paper. And now, under my tree, are a gazillion boxes all wrapped up beautifully in blue-with-penguins wrapping paper. Score!

I’m 99% sure this is a joke. That being said, I actually did see wrapping paper like that at Target. It was blue with white text. Right in the same display as the paper with dollar signs all over it (I’m not kidding).

I have seen paper like this in the past, without the $ all over it.

Just don’t be like my parents who wrapped the gifts from Santa Claus in the same paper that was in the hall closet. That’s pretty much what convinced me that there’s no Santa Claus.

At our house Santa only wraps in plain red wrapping paper, with green or white bows/ribbon, depending on who the gift is for. (He tells which color is for which person in his note.) Last year Santa had a bitch of a time finding plain red wrapping paper. Even this year it was difficult to find. Finally found some at the Dollar Store but it was an orangy-red.

My great-grandparents started this tradition. All my brothers, sisters and cousins still carry on the tradition. It’s kind of nice!

I saw what you did there.
Big Lots had some awesome abstract-y paper in purple and golds that I am hoping to snarf up for next year when it goes on clearance.

Given that the youngest person we have presents for is 24 years old, this is not an issue in our house. Even the dogs don’t believe in Santa anymore.

I am glad to see that others recognize the important of the Christmas wrapping paper crisis!
