Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: What's the Deal?

Ellis1138 - if “all the other stuff has been eliminated,” how do you know whether the cause of an individual’s symptoms is physiological or psychological? Moreover, if there is no clear treatment, does it matter?

Then folks face the whole chicken and egg causation and overlay problem. A great many people who experience chronic fatigue or pain ARE depressed. Of course, that is not to say that the depression is necessarily CAUSING the pain or fatigue. But where appropriate, why not treat the depression as well? Especially if there is no certain treatment for the accompanying physical symptoms.

I suspect it would be possible to review historical material and track a relationship between prevalent diagnoses of a certain time and that society’s predilection for assigning symptoms to either physical or psychological sources. That is all I was trying to say.

(And of course you know that the diagnosis of fibromyalgia is somewhat more complicated and problematic than simply “poking them in 11 places.” Unfortunately, too often medical sources act as tho some reference to “trigger points” is sufficient to support a dx of fibromyalgia.)

Best of luck managing your situation.
