omni-not, don’t get confused. You didn’t amuse me, Chronos did.
CnoteChris, that is a bit of a stretch. If you are going to use that broad a definition of solicit then every proper thread in GQ is soliciting (an answer to a question), half the threads in MPSIMS are soliciting (a prayer, a hug, a proposition).
Well, OneChance, while I haven’t gone and looked at the rules just now, I remember that the primary rule is “Don’t be a jerk.” Crossposting is jerky. Not just on the SDMB, but it’s widely regarded as such on just about ANY message board and newsgroups/usenet.
To make it perfectly clear, crossposting (posting the same message in more than one forum) is forbidden. Usuallly it’s newbies who do it, and all the threads but one get closed.
By the way, I’d like to point out that the subject of the crossposting, LittleTassie, is now banned. I looked her up, and she’s an old sympathy troll who’s been here before, pulling basically the same sort of trick.
That’s right. This is just a fucking message board. And for Chronos to get so snippy at a simple act of crossposting, which hurts no one in the slightest, is really kind of funny. He needs to relax. Whatever his problem is, lack of sex, unpopular, I really couldn’t care less. But if he nicely stated in the thread he closed that crossposting isn’t allowed and left the link intact, then there wouldn’t even be a problem. He needs to get a life. He’s taking his job way too seriously, and that’s a problem when this is just “a fucking message board.”
Lynn, I agree that crossposting shouldn’t be allowed, and maybe it needs to be explicitly mentioned in the agreement or maybe in the FAQ, but only if Chronos were less sarcastic no one would’ve even noticed. I read Little Tassie’s thread and it occurred to me pretty quickly that she was making it up, since if my child were sick I certainly wouldn’t be spending time on the Internet for crying out loud. Anyhoo, maybe a little civility is in order from all of us, even if this is “the Pit,” and maybe a better explanation of the rules is in order as well.
The point being, obfusciatrist, of the incedent of solicitation in this case is, “Please come here and visit this post… or, Please do this over here… etc. etc.” type of thread being posted accross every forum.
As broad as that definition can be, and it can describe the majority of posts around here, in this case it was clearly different. The OP was asking for others to participate in a thread in a different forum- soliciting people to come visit.
Broad, but still appropriate, given OneChances post, I think.
Previewing shows what I had feared- This poster was full of it from the get-go. Something about all that did seem fishy.
Anyrate, the point of my point still remains. That type of soliciting, or whatever you choose to call it, is not going to garner much of a positive response around here.
We aren’t disagreeing Cnote. I agree that it is a type of solicitation to be disallowed, but you supported it with an overly broad definition of the word.
Please avail yourself of as many as you might require.
If you have ignored the clearly expressed rules of this messge board and then complained about the tone in which a correction was issued, please take two.
While it seems that omni-not was genuinely ignorant of the rule, I have to wonder why. Threads get closed all the time, with a note explaining that it’s a duplicate thread. Like Chronos, I would have ASSUMED, given omni-not’s length of time here, that he was knowingly breaking the rules, and that would explain Chronos’ tone.
Sure could’a fooled me Mr. Cyn. Seems to me that setting someone up with a thread (without their prior permission) that consumes a lot of their time and energy, then shrugging off the same sort of assignment when it comes back your way pretty much defines the term “rectal cavity”. Now, what was that line about “not being a jerk”? At least Fairy Princess Kitty had the ovaries to let everyone know why she was bowing out of her thread, unlike you, who showed the white feather.
Even though I’ve been spanked a few times here, I still maintain that the mods do an effing outstanding job at these boards. Slackers like you might disagree Cyn, but I’m sure Alphagene will be happy to file your complaint right next to “occasional personal dryness”.
It’s interesting to compare Gaudere’s carefully worded admonition to Chronos’s more heavy-handed treatment. Which one was more appropriate? Well, I don’t see anyone starting a Pit thread over Gaudere, so…
I think where Chronos crossed the line was the none-too-subtle threat of reporting omni-not to an Administrator. manhattan did the same thing in this thread: Why can’t I get stoned? His rather harsh reaction to Dani Filth describing how to build a gravity bong only served to spark a flood of drug-related questions in GQ and ATMB of which many had the sole intention of pissing off the mods even more.
I’ve dealt with several board moderators elsewhere on the 'Net, and guess what, they’re ALL cranky, short-tempered S.O.B.'s. It must come with the territory. Still, that doesn’t mean they can’t take a lesson and try and tone down their actions. Or move out of NYC, whatever.
Look, maybe Chronos could have used different wording but sheesh for all you know Chronos had a root canal or the fact that any member that frequents here long enough knows, you don’t cross post and it got his BVDs a little stuck in his butt.
Oh no! A Snide Tone! Beware, everyone, a Snide Tone is coming! Horrors, horrors and lament! Hide in the shadows! The Apocalypse is nigh, for lo! it’s a SNIDE TONE!!!
Damn straight. And I’ve never reeled it in when sissy boys whined about their oh-so-delicate feelings not being pandered to.
I see no reason why ANYBODY should get their panties in a knot simply because “it was a delicate matter”. It would have been out of line if Chronos had come back and said “Nobody gives a crap if anyone’s sick” or somesuch… but you can’t fault a guy for doing his damn job. It’s hard enough as it is… we don’t need whining dumbshits making it tougher.
[[I doubt that moderators are picked solely for their ability to dispense sarcasm and biting commentary. Rather, I would assume that knowledge of how to appropriately act in a given situation would be key.]]
Because, otherwise, we’d have to climb real mountains, which gets very fucking tiring. This way, there’s a sense of accomplishment without actually having to do any work.
You’re darned tootin’ it’s coming down. The <insert expletive of your choice here> cost me more than just the emotional ride that everyone else took - she cost me TIME. And lots of it. I had to retrieve her email, send a response, download her picture, edit it and upload it to the site. I created her web page, edited the 2 pages that link to it and then edited the 2 index pages to insert her page. Do you have any idea how much time all that takes?
Now I have to log back into my site, delete her page, log into the other site where her picture is stored and delete that, edit the other 2 people’s pages to re-link them back to each other and edit both of the index pages to remove her name.
