Thanks for closing my thread for no reason ya prick. I’ve seen you do seemingly random shit like this to other peoples threads too.
Contrary to what your imagination conjured up I was NOT interested in pitting or embarrassing another poster, which is why I didn’t bother including the person who made the original post. I was interested in the opinion on whether the behavior described was assholish, and it appears that there were many differing views. The original poster wasn’t germane to the discussion at hand.
Hell, John T came in and identified himself for Christs sake and you had already posted multiple times in the thread so where’d you’re beef come from?
A few of the posters in the IMHO thread were pleased to describe the quoted party (a poster on these boards) as “white trash” and “lacking in class and manners.” And of course, the OP himself called the quoted party an asshole. (Forgive me: he inquired, pointedly, whether the quoted party was acting like an asshole. Quite a difference!) All this is pretty plainly Pit territory.
I don’t think the OP meant any particular malice; he was just a little thoughtless. But that’s not the issue. The issue is we don’t get to call each other assholes outside of the Pit (or ATMB, but only when directed at mods). That way, the mods don’t need to do probing psychological readings of posters’ intentions; they just have to see if it uses language conventionally understood to be insulting or disparaging.
This is true even if the OP phrases it in the form of question. It’s also true even if the target agrees to it taking place outside of the Pit—it isn’t the target’s prerogative to suspend the rules. And it is particularly true so as to prevent such polls from becoming fads among those who would be less thoughtless and more malicious in creating them.
I am not a mod, but I think you can pit mods in the Pit – just not for their actions as mods. And you can curse their actions in ATMB, but not them as mods or as human beings.
Upon reflection, I think that once JohnT had posted in the thread and identified himself as the customer, it would have skewed the poll and the responses from that point on. A few people referred to him as an asshole before he ID’ed himself, and he even joined in with the opinion he thought he behaved like an asshole, but while people may have no problem calling someone an asshole in general terms, once the poster’s name was known, some people definitely would have had a problem with calling him an asshole outside of the Pit, not desiring to break the rules. People were honest in their responses, but further responses might not have been as honest, knowing that we were talking about a specific person who replied to the thread. People might have backed off in their opinions, not wishing to offend JohnT, even though he apparently was fine with the thread. Instead of closing the thread, though, I believe it might have been better for Czarcasm to just move it to the Pit, restoring everybody’s freedom to be honest and call him an asshole if they truly believed his behavior was out of line.
For the record, I voted “not assholish.” I thought JohnT’s anger at the situation was completely understandable and that he restrained himself well.
No, it wasn’t. See my post number 7.
I’m guessing the OP remade the topic in this forum probably knowing full well that he/she was using language not allowed. : p
Had I known that my dinner at Ruth’s Cris would’ve inspired no fewer than three threads about four years after the fact, I would’ve swept my arm across the table, bellowed my rage, and left my wife and daughter behind me, embarrased and in tears, while I stormed out of the place.
Then I would’ve received an actual Pitting and none of this unpleasantness would have happened.
Sorry, everybody. Next time I’ll try to do better.
And in regards to Czarcasm’s actions, it seems pretty obvious that he(?) read the thread, made his comment, and then realized a few minutes later “Oh, wait - this is about another poster, isn’t it? I’d better do something about this…” No big deal, really.
It seems that the “(moved from Pit)” part of the title was causing some confusion, so I’ve edited the thread title to remove it. To reiterate: this thread was not moved from the Pit. I closed the original Pit thread - Cubsfan reposted his OP from there to ATMB with (so far as I can tell) no changes other than the title.
