Would like an administrator to clarify two moderator warnings

  1. What are these two moderators angry about?
  2. Why did they lock my polls?
    http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=8194878#post8194878
  3. Can you reopen the poll in question?
  4. If not, can you tell me again why I should pay one of the highest board prices on the web to become a member?

Czarcasm explained why he closed the first one. I closed the second one because it was a repeat of the first one. You don’t get to keep reposting the same OP once it has been closed. I could, perhaps, have been gentler about it.

Moderator Notes:
That said, criticism and discussion of moderator actions belong in the Pit, to whence this goes.

Moved from ATMB to the Pit.

I can’t say I saw much of a problem with the first thread. I’m not aware that joke or parody polls are against the rules. I suppose that there could have been some rationale for closing it under the “no post-padding rule,” but it didn’t seem to have reached that level.

This said, the best approach when it was closed would have been to contact a moderator by email with a request that it be re-opened. It’s not a good idea to simply start another thread when one has been closed unless you have discussed it with a moderator.

Don’t let the door hit you on the ass on your way out. If you think it’s worth it (and many do), pay to remain. If not, don’t. Either way, don’t bitch about it.

In seeking clarification for a thread closing, it helps to read the warning carefully. You also could have asked Czarcasm and/or Frank privately via email about it.

(I hope I’m not stepping on anybody’s toes here.)

Frank said that if you started the same thread again you would get a warning. So far, the only thing that has happened to you is two of your threads were locked. It’s rare that someone gets two threads locked in such a short time period, but it doesn’t appear that any other sanction was imposed.

As to whether you pop for the membership fee, nobody really cares. The ability to post here is either worth the fee to you, or it is not. From my perspective, the hours of entertainment I’ve enjoyed here came at a bargain price. Haven’t done the math, but I suspect it costs fractions of a penny per hour. Your milage may vary.

Don’t let the door, etc.

1 ) Czarcasm did not explain why he closed the first one.
I do not know why he closed the first one.
Why did he close the first one?

  1. I did NOt repeat the same OP. Didn’t you even bother to read it before closing it?
Try reading it again and tell me it was the same.
    Is it the same?

  2. Why send things to the pit? Just to insult me on purpose, hold me up to ridicule?
Is that the reason? Because that was the result.

  3. And I’d still like to know why, since you are so intent on insulting me, that I shoud be expected to want to pay for the privilege.

sigh

Board policy is very clear. Complaints about the mods go in the pit. It’s not a personal insult.

You don’t have to buy a membership. That’s why you get a free trial period. If you don’t like the board, keep your money. Judging by your brief history here, I suggest that you may be happier elsewhere.

Although I don’t think the OP’s original complaint was worth getting het up about, *if he pays his nickel, he gets to bitch.
*

IF!

Yes, he did. He said: “This one seems to be a parody or joke poll, so I’m going to go ahead and close it.” There’s your reason.

You added more verbage and waffle, but yeah – the poll was the same one.

Nah – whinges about mods and admins go here. You started the ridicule train by posting two poll threads on the same thing.

You’re not expected to. How you choose to spend your dough is up to you.

Quality, that’s why. This board only uses the finest insults, the purest invective, and the most original epithets you’ll find any where on the internet. Getting insulted on the Straight Dope would still be cheap at twice the price.

I gots no dog in this rat killing but being new I’m curious…

I remember a thread not too long ago where a mod stopped in and clarified for everyone that it was a parody of another thread, then it rolled merrily along. And I think I remember seeing lots joke polls so what am I missing?

Steven

Good point, Don’t fight the hypothetical. I was supplying the reason provided – didn’t say it made sense. It doesn’t, really, not to me. I tend to be thick-as when it comes to parodies around here. I put that down to cultural differences, north-south divide, that kinda thing. But yeah – when were parodies made illegal, and what on earth was the OPs a parody of? Enlightenment would be welcome.

Actually, it wasn’t. The first one was an actual joke/parody poll. Second thread was requesting people to offer up their own examples of the type of “choices” given. I think the OP’s mistake was to use the exact same list of choices for both threads.

I seriously don’t understand the point of locking a thread, unless it’s because of spam, or some blatant violation (such as illegal activity).

I believe a thread that doesn’t violate the aforementioned rules, should persist without mod intervention. If a thread is unpopular, it’ll die a natural death, but if a thread is receiving posts, then I don’t see any valid reason to close it, because clearly some people are enjoying it.

Or (while this is not the case for the polls) there is trolling going on, or the OP requests it, or because there have been previous warnings stating that the mods don’t want to see another thread like this one, or…

Ah. Thanks, Kat, you’re right. I think the verbage put me off from seeing that. Cheers.

Look at Liberal’s thread in that forum. It’s the one that’s now locked (per his request).

You shouldn’t. Go away.

Thanks, John Mace. Told you I was thick when it comes to this parody thing!
