Look, first of all, don’t tell me, TheRyan, or anyone else what to do or not to do. We’re not your kids, your wife, or your pets. If someone wants to ridicule Christianity, it’s their right to do so.
Secondly, I don’t think he or I, or anyone else for that matter were ridiculing your fucking religion.
Third, just calm the fuck down. THere isn’t and never was any reason for you to attack him or make statements that assume anyone is being disrespectful of your beliefs. Beliefs differ, Deal.
You obviously know nothing about The Ryan. He is filth, as shown by his anti-Christian, anti-gay, semantic-game-playing behavior and should be treated as such.
And you’re apparently a rabid, judgemental Christian with a severe axe to grind.
I don’t care about him, but your reactions to his post are beyond assinine. He posts a mild rant, you go off and insult the guy. Get off it already, open up a thread about him or something. But there’s no reason to insult someone who has what appears to be a legitimate beef with the media.
I don’t think TheRyan has any hardcore groupies on the board or anything, but what the hell. I think your judgement has seriously lapsed. He is a wonderfully frustrating fellow, but I think the brush you paint him with is a little too wide. And you might want to put some thinner on it… looks a lot like tar. Funny thing about tar, it often sticks to you. Know what I mean?
The only ‘scum’ are people who turn non-personal posts into personal ones by directly cussing the originator.
The ryan did not attack you. so why did you attack him, calling him scum?
The very second someone personally attacks someone else in a thread or conversation in which an opinion is expressed I cease to see any value in what they [the attacker] say.
If you disagreed with what he said and you wanted to be taken seriously you should not have called him scum!
I find it amazing that you so easily leap to call another poster “scum” and “filth”, but you expect us to sympathize with you because he is a “Christian-basher” (perhaps oversensitive, but this hardly applies) and, oddly, a “gay-basher” (though you have not provided any evidence to support this).
I’ve never had a problem with The Ryan. While I don’t agree with the premise of his OP, I feel no need to say such nasty things. Why do you?
TheRyan equated homosexuality with pedophilia, then tried to use semantic games to back out of his initial attack, though no one bought it.
If you have a problem with Christianity, that’s fine. But if you start a thread just to denigrate the religion, and basically call it crap, then you’re attacking me.
If you equate gays with pedophilia, then you are attacking me.
Can you post a link? I am not willing to take your word for it, considering you massively overstate the offensiveness of this thread by saying:
Um, where did he say that? From what I understood, he was expressing frustration at one religious viewpoint being portrayed as universal or proven. Whether or not you agree with this, this does not mean that he denigrated Christianity and ‘called it crap’. Do you believe that Buddhism or Islam is true and should be accepted as such by everyone? No? Are you then denigrating them? Obviously not.
I’m afraid I can’t take your word about the gay-bashing issue, as either you have poor reading comprehension or you jump to conclusions (likely, both), as is evident by your accusations.
The person who is being a jerk in this thread is not The Ryan. His was a mild, impersonal rant. You responded with a personal attacks and unfounded accusations. Either support these with fact, or – if you can stop chewing this bone – apologize.
No, he was offended that the media was being respectful to Christianity, which they should be. They should be respectful to all religious groups. The media calling the Church of the Nativity the birthplace of Christ does no one any harm. That this asshole flew off the handle because they didn’t spit on Christianity by denying its beliefs just shows that he has a chip on his shoulder against religious folks, just like he does against gays.
**
I have no problem with Buddhism or Islam. If I were discussing Islam’s holy places, I would not call them alleged. I would say “Jerusalem is the city where Mohammed took his night journey to Heaven.” In fact, in my column where I discussed Jerusalem and Sharon’s racist war, I did exactly that.
**
I have neither. You, on the other hand, are defending a bastard who is the only truly evil person, besides Manhattan, that I’ve encountered on this board. Which makes you no better than him, in my estimation.
**
If you denigrate my religion, you denigrate me. Same as if you denigrate gays.
You, sir, are a stark, raving looney. The media, if it is to even pretend to be without bias, should not go around acting as if every religion is factually correct. Quite literally, they cannot all be correct. Pretending as if they are is not being respectful. As such, I felt TheRyan is absolutely right in suggesting that a potentially (though not likely) mythical figure whose birthplace is not corroborated by anything (that I’m aware of) other than a religious tome should be treated as if it were a piece of information that has not been confirmed by independent sources. Let the 700 Club call it the birthplace of Jesus.
This is not an attack on your religion. You foaming at the mouth is an attack on your religion. You condemning another for minor infractions is an attack on your religion. You trying to tell us that we are defending a gay-basher/ christian-basher is completely over the top.
I’m not defending anyone. I’m just calling you a fucking lunatic. GET A GRIP.
As a christian, frankly I too find it fairly annoying when the news refers to the C of N as being the “birthplace of Jesus” or the “birthplace of Jesus according to Christian tradition”. There ** is no **Christian tradition (common to all the various flavours of christianity, that is) that says Jesus was born on the site of that church. It is Christian tradition that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, but as far as the specific site is concerned, it’s simply the ‘best guess’ of a bunch of people in around the 300s AD or later, who thought it would be nice if people had a particular spot to go celebrate Jesus birth at.
Same goes for the site of Golgotha, and the tomb, and the Stations of the Cross, and pretty much any other ‘historically linked’ site round those parts. The first christians really didn’t consider this sort of thing important, and their specific geographical knowledge died with them.
Now we return you to your regularly scheduled TheRyan-grilling…
Oh, really? I suppose that your comments about the OP in this thread being “filth” wasn’t quite to the level of true and complete evil. Fair enough, but I fail to see why I have achieved “truly evil” status for calling you on what I still maintain is gross overreaction and hypersensitivity on your part. Perhaps I should earn it because I wouldn’t spit in POWER_station’s face and want him to die.
Kirkland, I am going to say this once with all seriousness and as much compassion for you as I can muster: you are defensive and hypersensitive to the point of hysteria. You are taking offense here in a thread where none was intended and going so far as to call a person “truly evil”. I don’t even want to know why you have such a grudge against Manhattan. Please, in the apt words of erislover, get a grip on reality.
You may have a beef that the media should address all religions as true to be respectful of their beliefs. Very well. However, there is absolutely no grounds for calling a person evil just because they do not share a viewpoint with you on an issue, especially such a minor point of media etiquette.
The person who flew off the handle in this thread is YOU. I do not mean to attack you or to defend The Ryan. I am simply pointing out that you are acting in a nonsensical and hateful way that, from what I have seen, is evident in your debating style. It is not necessary to demonize and rant in order to get your point across.
It seems like you’re the type of person that thinks that there are only two possible positions on Christianity: “It’s definitely true” or “It’s crap”. It seems like you, like many other people such as Pat Buchanon, think that “respect” means submission.
CNN:
"In Bethlehem, the standoff continued at the Church of the Nativity, where some 200 people, including Palestinian gunmen, have taken refuge. Israeli troops have surrounded the church, which is built on the site where Christians believe Jesus was born, demanding the gunmen surrender. "
The above statements seem sufficiently qualified to this reader.
