why is it so bluish? other smoke isn’t that distinctive blue. so what’s in tobacco that makes it burn blue?

Hmmmm. I must be burning oil.
i don’t get it.

I just stinks - I don’t care if you smoke as long as I don’t have to smell it.
A sign that a car (it’s engine?) is “burning oil” is if it is giving off bluish smoke. For example, my car uses a lot of oil. When I realized this my uncle said he’d watch to see if I was giving off blue smoke. If it’s burning oil, that’s a bad thing.
I’m with you on that. I feel the same about BBQ’s.
Peace,

yeah. i second the “I just stinks” (hee)- even while smoking, it sucks royal to have someone else’s smoke all up in your face. I try to never breathe smoke toward anyone, especially nonsmokers.
but anyway, weed smoke (so I’ve heard- drugs are illegal in the US and i am not doing any drugs right now) is not blue. or at least not as blue as tobacco smoke.
burning paper does not make blue smoke, does it? it’s a lot blacker.
so what is the deal? less carbon particulates, or what? is it the size of the smoke particles that gives the smoke such a bluish cast? heavens if i know…
jb
It’s blue because the tobacco smoke particles are 10-1000 nm in diameter and you get Rayleigh scattering. For particles <= to the wavelength of light, scattering is proportional to 1/wavelength[sup]4[/sup]. Translated to English, that means that blue scatters more. Once you inhale, its a different story:
The average particle size must go up before the smoke is exhaled. Smoke from this "weed " you refer to must also consist of larger particles.
you all rock!
