Well Lissa, the problem is that for anything you can think of, somebody, somewhere, is either about to or is actually masturbating to it. So what do we do? When that guy finds no more diaper ads, do you think he’ll be magically cured? Or will he perhaps seek another way to get off? Should we keep children out of sight until they turn 18?

Meh. People need to get a life. I’ve some adorable photos of The Fem-Bot as a baby, toddling around the front porch in Pittsburgh without a stitch on. Now, if I shot and took the roll of film to be developed, I’d get arrested.

The fake tattoo? Please. Her mother is A SUPER MODEL, PEOPLE. Of course she’s going to emulate Mom’s attitude, poses, tattoo, etc. Kids emulate their moms and dads. Unless someone has really good proof that Mom in this case is doing something bad with the kid, I think folks are getting wound up over nothing at all.

You said that pretty explicitly in your first post, but the later post that I quoted still struck me as allowing a little more leeway than I frankly think such views deserve. Like I said, this is something that I’m beginning to find seriously troubling; I’m upset by the idea that we’re supposed to live in such terror of pedophiles that we start to regard a young child’s completely innocent nudity (something that I understand disappears suddenly and spontaneously as a kid gets a few years older) as something that has to be hidden away completely. I think I overreacted a little to what you said, since obviously we basically agree. But I find this horror at naked children really disturbing and I think it’s something people should respond to for what it is - hysteria.

Then we’re on the same page and I need to quit being the Queen of Redundancy, thereby making my meaning even more convoluted. Carry on.

Books have been written on this very subject-- very, very thick books. I don’t pretend to be an expert on why American culture has such a high incidence of sexual violence or even just violence in general. But there are a few factors at work that might be of interest:

1. Greater media saturation. Incidents are widely publicized. It makes it seem like there have been massive numbers of child molestation cases because they stick out in your mind…

Only US incidents are widely publicized in the US. Same as porn rings involving any EU country are more likely to be splashed all over Spanish TV than a ring involving only three guys in S’pore, mind you. US-only “sucesos” (meaning not successes but stuff like thefts, murders or drug busts) don’t get any publicity on this side of the Atlantic Ocean unless there’s something very peculiar about them.
