Circumcision...medical necessity or barbarism

I’m gonna have to agree with Kid on this one; I think that there is quite a different statistical story here in America when you stratify the population by socio-economics and race. The only guy I know who is uncut is a British expatriate.

Possible TMI: FWIW, an “experienced” female friend of mine indicated that she actually preferred the “feel” of uncut penii, but didn’t like looking at them. So I’ll stick with my “brutally and irreversibly disfigured” cut member.

[hijack] Isn’t there a society that advocates a medical procedure to replace foreskin? Remember seeing it a few years back, but I’ll be damned if I can remember the name of the group.[/hijack]

You’re right, among whites it’s not 65% circumcised, it’s 41% And this was in 1999 (the rate is decreasing rapidly.)

You’re experience might be different because of your age. The circumcism rate was much higher in the past. It peaked in the 60s and has been going down since.

Eh, I’m 22, and my above statement still applies. So maybe the uncut revolution has not yet reached us hicks yet.

I gave statistics for 1999, you must have been born at least 18 years before then. So, yeah, the rate 22 years ago was probably different.

And it also makes a big difference where in the US you were born.

The National Center for Health Statistics of the Department of Heath and Human Services of the U.S. Federal Government compiles statistics on the number of circumcisions performed in four regions of the US and in the entire nation.

                    Circumcision Incidence Rate (1999)

Northeast Region 65.4%
Midwest Region 81.4%
Southern Region 61%
Western Region 36.7%

All Regions 62.8%

So if you were born 4 years ago in Oregon you would most likely have not been circumcised. If you were born in Indiana, you probably would have.

READ. MY. POST.

Did I EVER mention the word barbarism?

Did I accuse you or anyone else of being barbaric re circumcision?

And what you do with your son is your business, as long is it’s legal, which circumcision currently is in your country.

I care about MY possible future son, and I am undecided about circumcision, which is why I welcome debate.

You’ve made your choice, if you don’t want to listen to others debating the matter, stay away.

As a barbarian, let me jump in to say that I chose not to have my sons circumcised, despite the fact that they look different than daddy. My only fear is that they may get teased in high school locker rooms. Other than that, I haven’t any concerns.

Dan Savage, when deciding whether to get his son circumcised, eventually decided on the operation. IIRC, the deciding factor for him was that fellators tend to prefer the taste of a circumcised penis to an uncircumcised one. He believed that by circumcising his son, he’d be improving his future sex life.

I thought it was an interesting point.

I’m sure that it’s very sensitive, as is pretty much that whole area. My point was that although I’m sans foreskin, I still think sex is pretty darn cool, and have never thought, “Dammit, I wish I hadn’t been brutalized when I was a wee lad.” Hey, maybe sex would 50 times better if I wasn’t circumsized. And maybe haggis is the most delicious dish known to man. But I’ll never know either way, because I was circumsized, and the idea of sheep innards is icky.

I actually came on here to post a question about uncircumcised penises. But my question is from a different perspective.
My friend Kate just ‘tired’ to take her relationship with Mike to ‘the next level’ last night at which time she saw an uncircumcised penis for the first time. It made her sick to her stomach. She has a week stomach, it’s not her fault, it’s actually due to hazardous chemicals her father was exposed to as a child (she got a whopping $3,000 in a class action suit). But anyway, she finds the site of his penis repulsive. She has been with Mike for 2 months and really likes him. She loves giving head and manually stimulating her partner, but at this point she just cant see ever being able to be turned on by ‘it’ again. And she is afraid to get deeper into the relationship just to find out that she really wont be able to handle it. Also, Mike HATES it. He said his parents won’t talk about why they didn’t circum. him or his brother but that “it makes everything so much harder”. The questions are

  1. How does she approach the subject of ‘Since you hate it why don’t you have it done now?’
  2. Can any of you tell her more about the process of an adult ‘getting it done’, and how common that is?
  3. How do you stimulate an uncut. penis (both manually and orally)
  4. What does the guy and girl have to do differently before, during and after intercourse?
    And here is my question:
Is there any thing for me to do or say that might help her not be so disgusted by it? Mike is the only b/f of hers that my husband has actually gotten along with. I like him too. But I can honestly say that this would be a big deal for me also. Thanks

No he didn’t, he decided against the operation. He said that HE prefers circumsised penises, but since he didn’t plan on felating his own son, and his boyfriend was against circumcision, he could “keep is old foreskin, then”.

Really? I coulda sworn he decided on the operation. I must be getting senile in my old age.

I’m snipped, i think unsnipped penises look freaky, i’ve heard about smegma forming under the foreskin, and the very thought of that freaks me out. Thank goodness i don’t have to worry about that. My kids will probably be snipped, i don’t find i barbaric at all and it is more hygenic. Plus i couldn’t begin to tell an unsnipped son how to clean it with all that foreskin in the way.

Is it really that tough? I mean, I don’t have a penis, but i’d imagine it’s no harder than pushing the labia out of the way to clean the vulva.

Really, the foreskin moves right? It should slide back over the glans so it can be cleaned.

I am all for circumcision, but not done on others.

I think everyone should decide for themselves after becoming an adult to have it done, or not to have it done. It is a barbaric mutilation of other peoples bodies, and no one, not even a parent, should be allowed to mutilate others.

I dont care what the custom is, stretching the neck, the lips, tatooing, ears pierced, or circumcision, whatever, should only be an individual choice.

Cleaning it is not hard at all. It always bewilders me when I see this argument raised.

I’ve taught my 2 (intact) sons to clean themselves. When the foreskin is ready, it starts to be retractable. This happened for both my boys at around 3. Then you just pull it back in the bathtub and wipe a washcloth around it. Takes about 10 seconds a day.

It’s much easier than washing their face or hair.

If my 3 year old can do it himself, then surely a gown man could do it without much problem.

Worldwide fewer than 25% of men are circumcised. The other 75% of men manage to keep their penises clean.

It’s no big deal.

When the foreskin is ready? What does that mean? does it suddenly turn from green to normal color like fruit?

No, it goes from being attached (almost like it’s glued) to the tip of the penis. Then it just starts to unglue itself.

Little boys (and big ones) like to play with their penises. I remember one day my older son ran up to me all excited, because he found the forskin moved!

What I mean by ‘when it’s ready’ is that it becomes unattached without aby outside help. Some doctors used to advise parents to try to pull it back. Now that’s widely recodnized to be a big no-no. It becomes unattached by itself (at different ages for different individuals)

Not only is it remarkably easy to clean, it’s also fun to clean!

Particularly if you have an assistant.

No, if you look again you’ll see that 41% of all those circumcised were white not 41% of whites were circumcized.
