I trust the teeming millions more than Cisco or my reseller to help me get the correct equipment without giving me stuff I don’t need… that said…
We’re upgrading our ISP and putting private lines in between our offices to support data and QoS for VoIP between phone systems. I’ve got some Cisco routers sitting around from old configurations that I’m curious if we can use and what we’ll need to add, or if we’ll need new equipment entirely.
Here’s the background scenario:
New York has two DIA lines from two different ISPs, both already routed and delivered to the network as 10-BaseT ethernet. New York will connect via T1 to Los Angeles.
Los Angeles has one DIA line routed and delivered via 10-BaseT ethernet. Los Angeles will connect to New York and San Francisco via two T1 lines. Eventually, Los Angeles will connect to Orange County via a T1.
San Francisco also has one DIA line routed and delivered via ethernet. SF will connect to Los Angeles via a T1.
All three networks use different private address schemes and NAT, so routing between the offices shouldn’t be too difficult.
Current equipment: I’ve got one Cisco 2600 series router with a WIC-1DSU-T1 v2. I was thinking of using this in NY since it gives me an additional expansion slot in case we end up with another east coast office. I’ve also got a Cisco 1600 series router also with a WIC-1DSU-T1. I was hoping to use this in SF since they don’t have much need to expansion.
Questions:
1a. Can I use the 1600 in SF?
1b. If so, how would I set a route to the internet/NAT when there’s only a single ethernet interface? Additional equipment?
2a. Can I use the 2600 in NY?
2b. If so, how can I set two routes (either load balanced or fail-over) to the two internet connections and NAT them differently when there’s still only a single ethernet interface? Additional equipment?
- For LA, I was thinking of using a 2800 series router since it will give me 4 WIC slots (3 for immediate use plus expansion). Would this work, and could I route to the internet via NAT over the second ethernet interface?
If you’ve gotten to the end of this, I appreciate your patience and any help or insight you can give
