I have to write up a blurb about Maya Angelou, and was considering including this alleged quote of hers:
“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”
Unfortunately, the only place I can find this is on those cheesy quotations sites, which give no hint at what the source of the quote was (most likely, another one of those sites…).
So, is this a real Maya Angelou quote? Or not? And what’s the source cite?
I’d have to dig up my copy of her first autobiography out of my basement to verify – but it sounds like it could be from I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. It sounds like a reference to her her self-imposed muteness after she was molested by a family friend and her uncles, uh, “took care” of the guy.
