Cities/sites between Charleston and Chapel Hill worthing visiting...

My fiance and I will be driving from Charleston to Chapel Hill soon and, since she’s from Taiwan, I want to show her around. I’ve got some ideas, but I’d like some more input.

Also, any place that would be nice to stay a night would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry so vague, but I’m really just looking for all kinds of suggestions…

Charleston SC or Charleston WV?

If it’s Charleston WV, there’s always Mt. Airy, NC which is AKA “Mayberry” (from the* Andy Griffith Show*)

Sorry. Charleston, SC.

We tend to forget that there are other Charlestons…

It depends on which way you are driving. If you are going up the coast, then west on I-40, check out the Wilmington NC area. Lots to see, do, and eat there, I can elaborate, if you wish. If you are going inland, then Congaree National Park is very nice to see.

The Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) is a fun, lively place. Lake Crabtree, Falls Lake, and Umstead State Parks are all quite nice.

I’m sure some Charlestonians will be along to extoll the many virtues of that beautiful area as well. Make sure you spend some time there.

I’d avoid Myrtle Beach, unless you like golf or touristy crap. It’s more or less Branson Missouri on the coast. Definitely avoid South of the Border on I-95 at all costs, it is the very definition of a tourist tarp. Nasty.

It would help a lot if you could tell us what route you plan to take.

I was born and raised in Charleston. Been to Myrtle Beach many a time. Loved it when I was a kid, hate it now. Yet, it never ceases to amaze me the number of people I meet around the world who know of SC only because they’ve been to Myrtle Beach.

I don’t have a route. I’m willing to travel the route that offers the most enticing opportunities, unless it adds more than, say, two hours to my driving time.
