Civil Trial: Trump v E. Jean Carroll (Carroll wins, awarded $5 million, plus 83.3 million)

Is there any indication when the appeal will be heard, or how long it will take?

It varies widely. I’m not familiar with the Second Circuit time lines, but I’d guess roughly 18 months.

Who the heck was willing to secure Trump’s bond? I didn’t think he’d be able to put the cash up or put up a bond. Now I’m wondering about his other civil judgment.

(Paid in Rubles)

To keep with the Big Lebowski theme, it would more likely be filled with his dirty undies. The whites.

:face_vomiting:

It is odd he claims he needs more time and after being told no, almost immediately produces the money.

I think he meant “I need more (delay) time”

Nothing odd about it, really. He’s desperately trying to project an image of “strength”, and pushing the court into granting him a delay he doesn’t need, and that no one else would get, makes him look “strong”.

Of course, it’s kind of backfired on him now, since he caved so quickly to the courts telling him “No!”

I’m starting to get the impression we can’t trust the former president.

Nothing he does with the courts makes him look strong. His “losses” far outnumber his “wins”. Maybe he thinks the odds are going to tilt in his favor with one of the lawyers he finds advertising on bus benches.

It’s not. According to CNN, it’s been underwritten by Chubb:

If anybody can underwrite such a bond, it is Chubb. How Trump convinced them to underwrite, I cannot even guess. They are very thorough in their choices as to what to underwrite; and like any surety underwriter, investigate risks so closely that they’ll only write a bond if they are assured that they will never have to pay it.

Well, I guess they will get their fee, at least, and if it comes down to subrogating, they will be ruthless. Forget Carroll’s lawyers moving against Trump’s assets if he loses the appeal; if Chubb pays out and subsequently has to subrogate, Trump will be left with very little.

Perhaps they will get Mar a Lago.

Edit: I wonder what the typical fee is. 10%? If their money is tied up for 18 months, that has to be taken into account.

Yeah, but good luck trying to tell him that. This is the guy who claims that world leaders are laughing at Obama and Biden, after some actual world leaders laughed at him right to his face.

Good for ms Carroll. I don’t see the appeal going anywhere.

Same. And with Chubb underwriting the bond DJT is going to be in for a world of hurt when he loses and the money is paid out to Ms. Carroll.

I couldn’t say. I’ve known a few surety underwriters, and from what I can tell, it’s never a flat one-size-fits-all percentage. It’s based on the bond-seeker, the risk involved, and other factors. At any rate, there is a fee that Trump will have to pay, and if he doesn’t pay it, Chubb will again be ruthless in collecting it. Those folks make the Godfather’s collection guys look like pussycats. Yes, I have known a few Chubb employees.

Text from a friend:

Is it just me or is it amusing that Trump, with all of his problems keeping his dick under control, gets the money to pay E Jean Carroll from a company named “Chubb”

They’ll call him up every week and play this:

It may be that the terms he got from Chub weren’t to his liking and so he was hoping that with a few extra days he could shop around more, or negotiate something better with Chub.

That would actually make some sense. The bond with chubb was signed on Tuesday. He may have been looking for something more dodgy.

Presumably he had to show Chubb that he has unleveraged assets worth the balance of the bond, yeah? I bet that’s a pretty grim “finding nickels under the couch” situation relative to his overall debt. He was probably pounding the pavement hoping to find somebody willing to pony up the funds for him without all that embarrassing paperwork (and leverage).
