I agree, and I would guess that they went into this gambling that he WOULD be back in power. If so they won’t even ask him to pay them back–they’ll just pay the judgment and write it off, hoping all the while that Trump will look on them with favor.
(At least in this scenario, Carroll gets her money.)
But, for real, this is the last paragraph from the case’s wiki page.
In September 2024, Trump’s counsel argued that the judgment should be overturned on the basis of flawed jury instruction, “highly prejudicial errors”, and presidential immunity.[272] On January 27, 2025, Carroll’s team argued that presidential immunity does not invalidate the verdict nor release Trump from paying the damages.[272] On April 11, the DOJ, saying Trump had acted in his official capacity as president when he made the statements about Carroll, asked the appeals court to substitute the U.S. as the defendant,[9] but the court rejected that request.[273] On June 24, Trump asked the court to overturn the decision on the claim of presidential immunity.[274] On September 8, the Second Circuit rejected the appeal.[8] On December 11, America First Legal, a conservative think tank founded by Trump adviser Stephen Miller, asked the U.S. Supreme Court to vacate both judgments against Trump, citing the omission of the DNA evidence.[275][c][p]
But then the poor woman (and her lawyers) have to deal with his massively complicated estate and the bullshit shell companies and his children who will aggressively fight her (and each other)
The status is still “When Pigs Fly”. As long as Trump has the whole Justice Department under thrall, who would ever enforce it? The Marshal’s Service? They report to Homeland Security. The courts resorting to posse comitatus to create a new Marshal’s service that answers directly to the courts and not Homeland? Would get tied up in lawsuits about the authority.
Her estate may eventually get something from his estate. But only if the elections lead to an administration change.
None of the above handful of posts are gloom and doom pessimism. All are fully aware expectations of reality.
Congratulations, USA, on creating a one-of-our-own fully above the law citizen.
We did it!
I’ve believed all along that this fucker will never spend a day in jail, nor pay out a cent to those he has screwed over. In that regard, he is much like the robber barons of old, although at least one of those families, the Vanderbilts, eventually ended up virtually penniless. We can only hope for the same for this bunch of criminals.
He’s already penniless. We don’t need him to be penniless; we need him to not be rich any more. How can the person with the lowest net worth in history still be rich? I have no idea, but it’s a sign that our system is fundamentally broken.
I suspect he has already reached the point where, if they ever did get him in the dock, someone would require a competency hearing, and he would be judged too far gone to stand trial.
