I think its a bit of both - but until we see the actual film, its going to be hard to say who ‘starts it’ - I’ve heard (maybe in this thread) that its egged on by a third party - which wouldn’t surprise me in the least - but is also not nearly as interesting as a legit action by both parties (different sides of same coin, etc) -
THis is why I hold out higher hope for CA : CW - the trailers are raising lots of questions - and we don’t have the full story - but atleast there appears to be legit differences of opinion thats organic to the charactors.
Supes vs Bats simply seems like a wrestling event - we all know its scripted and can truly only end one way, but we kinda want to see the body slams anyway.
And even if nobody’s done it yet, somebody could do it tomorrow, and then what?
I’m somewhat optimistic about Civil War because a single movie is a lot more likely to be coherent about the issues being addressed than the comic storyline was – the comics writers seem to have never even compared notes on exactly what the government’s new rules actually were, leading to scattershot depictions running the gamut from “reasonable attempt to solve a genuine problem” to “jackbooted fascist tyranny”.
And sometimes the exact same people too. Marvel’s got all of the popular “gods” as alien characters already.
Burn!
Fucking BUUUURN!
It looks likes the possible reports that Warner Bros. cracked down on comedy post-Green Lantern were true. Which is sad because jokes were not the reason Green Lantern failed, it was just a bad movie.
I’m still going to see this movie, I don’t care about the reviews. Curiosity and looky-loos will blow this past $400 million, but that might not be enough to sustain the coming franchises. Luckily, one rumored reason why Ben Affleck was cast is so he can bring his Argo writers in and take over if Zach Snyder fails to deliver. If early indications are correct, the next movies won’t be done by Snyder.

There were jokes and comedy in Green Lantern?
I think it’s possible that it could be a good movie, if people wanted a dramatic, philosophical movie of the sort that’s trying out for an Oscar rather than a fun, comedic romp with silly characters.
The negative reviews seem mostly to complain that the movie is grim. 12 Years a Slave was also grim, but that doesn’t make it a bad movie. It just makes it not be a lighthearted popcorn film.
There seem to, per this thread, be a lot of brand new IMBD accounts giving it 10/10 ratings (with no other reviews given). I have no idea if this is typical practice, but it suggests there is some potential artificial inflation of the user rating going on.
Jessica Jones the TV show got me back into comics. I loved it. There isn’t actually a lot of sex in the entire series taken together.
But thematically, the overarching theme of the whole story is rape in various forms. If that troubles you, you won’t like it.
Spoilers ahead for some plot points in the Jessica Jones TV show. If you’re not planning on watching it, it probably doesn’t matter if you get spoiled.
I found it a fantastic portrayal. A really serious story. Very well done and well acted.
David Tennant was incredible as the Purple Man. Again better than in the comic.
I also liked how the show didn’t cheat like the book and specify that Jones wasn’t “really” raped. That was a real weakness
And I preferred the tv series to the comic book for several reasons but for one because it was far more removed from the rest of the Marvel characters.
As time goes on I get less and less comfortable with the idea of costumed vigilantes. I just can’t ignore the implications of that. And the idea of super soldiers is also disturbing to me.
So I like it when it’s brought down to a more human level and Jessica Jones does that well. She has enhanced abilities but she’s not a vigilante, not anymore.
And it explores some of the real consequences of that stuff.
And … Heck … I like sex in stories of any kind.
Hell, he wiped the entire JLA’s memories once.
Watchmen is one of my most favorite books ever. The Watchmen movie captured the look but had no life to it. It was disappointing.
Thanks for the correction; I see what you mean now. Even there, it looks like the more recent reviews are a much more mixed bag vs. the more positive early ones; here’s the chronologically-sorted index:
But Jones isn’t capable of a healthy sexual relationship. She’s traumatized. She uses casual sex paradoxically as both an emotional barrier and as a way to break through her numbness.
And a lot of people do that.
And really I’m not interested in seeing healthy, normal sexual relationships in the same way that I’m not really all that interested in seeing healthy, normal relationships of any kind. The conflict, the problems, the things that have to worked through, those are what make it a story.
And I would argue that the traditional romantic comedy plot line of “boy-meets-girl, girl-hates-guy, guy-pursues-girl-until-she-gives-in” is a far, far worse and societally damaging lesson than showing people making sexual mistakes and finding a way to get over it and maybe making better decisions next time.
The first thing is something that isn’t realistic and isn’t a good lesson. The second is “yeah life is sometimes shitty like this, but let’s see where it can take you.”
And I like portrayals that show how often it much if he time life is really fucked yo and people make bad decisions, but maybe in the long run that’s okay.
And back to the comics, one thing I really liked was
How Jessica fell out with Luke, started dating someone else and then found out she was pregnant with Luke’s baby. … Or maybe she kind of already knew when she started dating the other guy that she was pregnant
I hope they keep that in the series at some point. It’s all kinds of fucked up, but it turns out okay. That’s what life is often like.
And one thing I really like about the way Jessica’s sexuality is portrayed is that she is allowed to have sex for all kinds of reasons, good and bad, and it’s not something she is punished for by the story it by society.
She can have sex for pure pleasure, she can have self-destructive sex, she can have healthy relationship sex, she can have casual meaningless sex, she can have multiple partners, she can have multiple relationships, but it’s all her decision, her life, and her choices and she isn’t shamed for it.
She can make decisions, make mistakes, have fun and it’s all within her power. If I had a daughter, that’s the kind of freedom I would want her to have.
Yeah, you can make mistakes, yeah you can just be selfish and enjoy yourself. So long as it’s not forced on you, it’s okay.
Jessica is broken. Sex and whiskey play very similar roles in her life. That’s her story. A Jessica with a healthy sex life, that would come at the end, when there’s no more story to tell.
It’s funny, because I mentioned before that the comic cheated in a big way in the backstory of what happened to Jessica and the TV show had more courage in that respect, but in a big way, Jessica’s first sexual encounter with Luke in the TV show was way more tame than in the comic book.
we’re just not going to see eye-to-eye on this.
I’ve been in love with Lynda Carter since I was 8.
Did you read Ms. Marvel? I just picked it up for my niece. It’s really good. Asian-American characters and nonsexual. Should fit the bill!
That was the first one and the most popular one but I can’t stand it for that very reason!
I was like 10 but as soon as it happened I thought “Hey, what happened to the people he save the first time? Did he just let them die now?” They never explained it!
Actually that was my second thought. My first was “Wait, Superman can turn back time by making the earth spin backwards? That’s stupid”
I just read a column that said that the most relatable Superman is goofy Clark Kent. He’s right. The only Superman I really liked was “Lois and Clark” and it was because of that … And because he called his parents in every show. Clark Kent and his mom and dad. That was a good show …
… Until Lois and Clark got married, then it got boring.
(And for some reason they made sure we knew that Lois and Clark were both virgins when they got married. Like WTF? Who cares? And, what, Lois was engaged to Lex and never slept with him? She’s lying.)
