I’m interested in reading about military balloon reconnaissance during the Civil War. A Google search didn’t turn up much. I’d really like to read more about the Confederate Balloon Corps, but I know there really wasn’t much to it and it didn’t last very long. Books about the Southern “Silk Dress Balloons” are of particular interest; but any Balloon Corps (Northern or Southern) would be cool to read as well.
I did find these two… now I have to hope they’re still in print!
Cornish, Jenkins. The Air Arm of the Confederacy. A history of the origins and usages of war balloons by the Southern armies during the American Civil War. Richmond: Civil War Centennial Committee, 1963.
Haydon, Frederick Stansbury. Aeronautics in the Union and Confederate Armies with a Survey of Military Aeronautics Prior to 1861. Baltimore 1941.
Anybody got any other (in print!) recommendations?
Thanking you in advance,
Creaky B.
