Most Civil War battlegrounds being maintained by the government forbid metal detectors. If your guy has thorough book knowledge of the era, perhaps he can locate a likely spot on private property. Then convince the owner to let him hunt…
Otherwise, how about shopping? There’s a guy on Antiques Roadshow who is in the business & I’m sure there are many more. Lots of fakes out there, though.
